Freshman MB Layne Self compiled 10 kills and four blocks to lead the University of Rhode Island over UMass Lowell, 3-0, Friday afternoon in the URI Art Carmichael Invitational at the Keaney Gymnasium.
 
With the loss, UMass Lowell slipped to 0-6 in its first NCAA Division I season and meets the University of Texas-El Paso Saturday at 12. URI meets UTEP tonight at 7:00 and the University of Hartford Saturday at 3:00.
 
Senior OH Brooke Peterson (Del Mar, Calif.) led UMass Lowell with five kills, two blocks, two aces and four digs while freshmen outside hitters Megan Young (Westlake Village, Calif.) and Lisa Tuggle (Colorado Springs, Colo.) each had three kills.
 
Junior MH Anisa Smith (Moraga, Calif.) also had three kills in addition to four blocks. Senior libero Carolyn Eddy (Dracut, Mass.) led the defense with a match-high 17 digs while junior setter Kamiren Humphrey (Tucson, Ariz.) dished out seven assists.
 
Freshman OH Lena Vedder added eight kills while hitting .429 (eight kills, two errors, 14 attacks) for the Rams while freshman setter Callan Kinnan compiled 16 assists, three digs and three blocks.
