Sophomore MB Allison Riggs registered 10 kills and three blocks as Sacred Heart University defeated UMass Lowell, 3-0, Saturday afternoon in the second round of the College of the Holy Cross Crusader Classic volleyball tournament at the Costello Athletic Center.
UMass Lowell, in its inaugural Division I season, slipped to 0-2 entering next Friday's non-conference clash with Hartford in the Marist College Volley in the Valley Tournament. The match is the first of nine straight away from home as the River Hawks return to the Costello Athletic Center on Friday, Sept. 27 against New Hampshire (7:00).
Sacred Heart improved to 2-1 and hosts America University Friday at 4:30.
Game scores favored the Pioneers 25-12, 25-14 and 25-15.
Junior MH Anisa Smith (Moraga, Calif.) led the River Hawks with nine kills and three blocks while hitting .400 (nine kills, one error, 20 attacks). Senior libero Carolyn Eddy (Dracut, Mass.) led the defense with 14 digs while junior OH Ella Merrill (Bermuda Dunes, Calif.) added three digs and five kills.
Junior setter Kamiren Humphrey (Tucson, Ariz.) and senior setter Olivia Parkins (Dracut, Mass.) each dished out eight assists.
Riggs hit .714 for Sacred Heart (10 kills, no errors, 14 attacks) while senior OH Dianis Mercado added nine kills and six digs. Freshman setter Kiki Robinson compiled 31 assists.
