Manhattan Trips UMass Lowell, 3-1, in Division I Opener

Junior OH Ella Merrill (Bermuda Dunes, Calif.) registered team-highs of 14 kills and 14 digs, but it was not enough as Manhattan College defeated UMass Lowell in its Division I volleyball debut Friday night at the Costello Athletic Center.

The match was part of the 2013 Holy Cross Crusader Classic as UMass Lowell enters Saturday afternoon's clash against Sacred Heart with an 0-1 record. Manhattan meets Stony Brook Saturday at 3 and the host Crusaders at 7:00.

Game scores favored the Jaspers 23-25, 25-23, 25-21 and 25-18.

Junior MH Anisa Smith (Moraga, Calif.) added nine kills and six blocks while hitting .346 (nine kills, no errors on 26 attacks) while senior OH Carolyn Eddy (Dracut, Mass.) led the defense with 17 digs.

Junior OH Brooke Peterson (Del Mar, Calif.) chipped in five kills, 11 digs and a pair of blocks while senior OH Kiana Raposo (Acushnet, Mass.) chipped in 14 digs. Junior setter Kamiren Humphrey (Tucson, Ariz.) dished out 20 assists in addition to seven digs.

Senior OH Ellie Wiekamp led the Jaspers with 12 kills and 16 digs while sophomore OH Sydney Volovski and senior MB Juliana Behrens each had 11 kills. Freshman L Allie Yamashiro led the defense with 23 digs while sophomore setter Teodora Peric had 23 assists.
