Marist College spoiled UMass Lowell's NCAA Division I debut with three goals in the first 26 minutes Thursday night en route to a 5-1 victory in a non-conference women's soccer match at Tenney Stadium.

With the loss, UMass Lowell enters Sunday's match at the University of Cincinnati 0-1. Marist improved to 1-1 and visits Duquesne Sunday at 12:00.

Junior G Jill Carlson (Lexington, Mass.) stopped six shots in her first start as Marist built an 11-3 edge in shots on target (24-3 overall).

"We knew we were playing the defending (Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) champion," said head coach Elie Monteiro. "We certainly got an education on the speed of the game at this level. Our second half was much better as far as coping with the demands of the game, marking and negating some of their effectiveness on the wings. As with any team we have to quickly learn and quickly adapt."

Senior F Alycia Cartica had a hand in Marist's first four goals and gave the Red Foxes a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute, finishing a cross from senior M Kylee McIntosh from the top right side of the box.

Cartica played catalyst in the 18th when her deflected ball into the box went to junior M Amanda Epstein who headed to freshman M Danielle Glazer, who headed home.

The Red Foxes took a 3-0 cushion in the 26th minute behind Cartica, who set up junior D Marissa Mertens for the finish. One minute into the second half, she scored unassisted for a 4-0 lead.

Marist maintained the pressure and nearly scored a fourth in the 53rd minute when Cartica hit the post.

The River Hawks, however, pulled a goal back in the 81st minute when freshman M Erin Scanlon (Auburn, Mass.) released junior F Brittany Russo (Danvers, Mass.), who beat the Marist defense and slotted past junior GK Andrea Wicks.

"If we give ourselves a chance, I think our frontrunners can give any defense a lot to handle," Monteiro added.

Any celebrations were short-lived for the River Hawks as Epstein fired home for Marist in the 84th minute when she took a through-ball from senior F Samantha Panzer and tucked in the low right corner.

Wicks had two saves for Marist.
