Stony Brook Deals UMass Lowell 3-0 Loss

Merrill leads UMass Lowell with seven kills; River Hawks home for next three matches

STONY BROOK, N.Y. (Oct. 6, 2013) – Sophomore OH Melissa Rigo and senior OH Kaitlin Costello combined for 18 kills to lead Stony Brook over UMass Lowell, 3-0, Sunday afternoon in an America East Conference volleyball match at the Pritchard Gymnasium.
 
With the loss, UMass Lowell slipped to 0-2 in America East (0-14 overall) and returns home for three straight matches. On Thursday, the River Hawks host Robert Morris at 7:00 and return to AEC action against Hartford Friday at 7:00 and Providence Sunday at 1:00.
 
Stony Brook improved to 8-11 overall and 1-1 in the AEC and visits Binghamton next Friday at 7:00.
 
Game scores favored Stone Brook 25-10, 25-11 and 25-16.
 
Junior OH Ella Merrill (Bermuda Dunes, Calif.) led UMass Lowell with seven kills and five digs while junior MH Anisa Smith (Moraga, Calif.) added four kills. Junior setter Kamiren Humphrey (Tucson, Ariz.) dished out 14 assists and added four digs.
 
Junior OH Hannah Rey (San Diego, Calif.) and senior libero Carolyn Eddy (Dracut, Mass.) led the defense with nine and seven digs, respectively, matching a season-high for Rey.
 
Rigo and Costello also chipped in nine digs apiece while junior MB Taylor Gillie and sophomore MB Stephanie McFadden each chipped in five kills and two blocks. Junior setter Hannah Dolan compiled 20 assists.
