UMass Lowell scores first America East win; Fernandes nets third minute gem

LOWELL (Oct. 19, 2013) – Junior F Homero Morais (Somerville, Mass.) scored two goals and senior M Kevin Zapata (Medellin, Colombia) set up two as UMass Lowell defeated Stony Brook, 3-2, in an America East Conference men's soccer clash Saturday night at Cushing Field.

The win was UMass Lowell's first in America East as it improved to 1-3-0 in the Conference and 3-12-0 overall entering next Saturday's clash at the University of Vermont.

Stony Brook slipped to 5-7-1 overall and 1-2-1 in America East and visits Lehigh Tuesday at 7:00.

UMass Lowell jumped out to a 2-0 cushion after 11 minutes behind a spectacular volley from freshman M Wuilito Fernandes (Praia, Cape Verde) and a stellar combination between freshman F Eric Martin (Danvers, Mass.) and Morais.

Fernandes opened the scoring, his fourth of the season, with aplomb in the third minute. Zapata broke free down the left side and crossed to Fernandes, who volleyed from top right corner of the box inside the left post.

Stony Brook, however, nearly leveled in the ninth minute when senior M Will Casey headed a cross from freshman B Rodrigo Uriarte across the box to senior M Shane Wixted, who headed wide left.

UMass Lowell capitalized on the miss and struck for a second two minutes later. Martin did well to win a ball back deep in the Stony Brook area, and crossed to Morais who slotted home uncontested inside the six-yard box.

Morais added his team-high seventh of the season in the 53^rd minute when he tucked a cross from Zapata at the penalty spot.

Stony Brook found its touch over a nervy final 20 minutes and scored twice to narrow the gap. Senior GK Chris Maierle (Wantagh, N.Y.) did well to save a point blank attempt from Casey, but freshman B Kofi Ramirez Osei-Tutu was there for the rebound in the 67^th minute.

In the 81^st, sophomore M Martin Giordano headed to freshman M Favio Sbarra on the run, who touched over a charging Maierle.

Stony Brook outshot UMass Lowell, 14-12 overall and 8-5 on target. Maierle had four saves while senior Carlos Villa stopped two shots.
