Solimine Leads UMass Lowell at New England Championship

Freshman places 90th in 19:00; Butler 97th in 19:07

Freshman Jackie Solimine (Haverhill, Mass.) placed 90th and senior Gina Butler (Dracut, Mass.) took 97th in a field of 133 runners to lead the UMass Lowell women's cross country team to 26th at the New England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association (NEICAAA) Championship Saturday at Franklin Park.
 
UMass Lowell scored 667 points (90, 97, 123, 152, 205 – 212, 236) and placed 18th among NCAA Division I schools. New Hampshire won the team title with 57 points while Connecticut placed second with 167. Yale (180), Boston University (186) and Middlebury College (192) rounded out the top five.
 
The field consisted of 283 runners representing 43 NCAA Division I, II and III teams.
 
Solemnize ran the 5K course in 19:00 flat and was 15th among freshmen in the 283-runner field. Butler was close behind in 97th with a time of 19:07 and freshman Erin Donovan (Lowell, Mass.) 123rd in 19:20.
 
Junior Karie Judge (Tewksbury, Mass.) placed 152nd in 19:34 while freshman Renee Vigneault (Amesbury, Mass.) placed 205th in 20:21 to cap UMass Lowell's scoring effort.
 
Senior Bridget Meehan (Nashua, N.H.) placed 212th in 20:26 while freshman Jennifer Pisarik (Chelmsford, Mass.) placed 236th in 20:48 to cap UMass Lowell's seven.
 
Junior Rosa Moriello of Boston University won the individual title with a time of 17:13, posting a 14-second lead on senior runner-up Eimear Black of Bryant (17:27).
 
In the junior varsity race, junior Chelsey Pepin (Derry, N.H.) placed 128th overall in 20:51 sophomore Megan Mahoney (Billerica, Mass.) placed 148th in 21:04 to highlight the River Hawks.
 
UMass Lowell enters the Brown University Rothenberg Run next Friday.
