Box Score

The College of Saint Rose, ranked No. 1 in the latest NSCAA Division II poll, scored two goals six minutes apart early in the first half and No. 12 UMass Lowell never recovered Saturday in Northeast-10 Conference women's soccer match at Cushing Field.

With the loss, No. 12 UMass Lowell slipped to 1-1-1 overall and 0-1-0 in the NE-10 and hosts Southern New Hampshire University Wednesday night at 7:00.

Saint Rose improved to 3-0-0 and 1-0-0 in the Conference and hosts Le Moyne Wednesday at 5:30.

Saint Rose opened the scoring in the 12th minute when junior M Sydney Bond (Deer Park, N.Y.) broke free in the box and headed home a corner kick from freshman B Amanda Vasquez (Tustin, Calif.).

The Golden Knights capitalized on a miscue six minutes later when a volley bounced over the reach of UMass Lowell goalkeeper Jill Carlson (Lexington, Mass.), only for Saint Rose freshman M Kristin Carr (Tolland, Conn.) to slot home uncontested from the right post.

UMass Lowell regrouped and mounted several attacks in the second half. Its best chance came in the 60th minute when senior F Keanna Santos (Lakeville, Mass.) released sophomore F Brittany Russo (Danvers, Mass.) on a breakaway through the middle.

Russo attempted to chip over oncoming goalkeeper Jessica Gerski (Harbor City, Calif.), but her attempt went agonizingly over the bar.

Santos nearly cut the lead in half in the 78th when she took a pass at the top of the box, held off her defender and spun right, but shot right at Gerski.

The Golden Knights then mounted a pair of attacks in the final 10 minutes. Junior F Carmelina Puopolo (Scarborough, Ont.) raced into the center of the box, but senior B Taylor Hartmann (Feeding Hills, Mass.) did well to deflect her attempt.

Puopolo threatened again on the next sequence, in which she shot out of a scramble deep in the UMass Lowell box, but Carlson reacted well to deflect the shot out of danger.

Saint Rose had an 11-6 shots advantage, including 4-3 on target. Carlson stopped two shots while Gerski had three saves.
