Box Score

Senior M Jenna Costa (Attleboro, Mass.) set up the first goal and scored the second as No. 17 UMass Lowell battled back to draw Long Island University Post, 2-2 in double overtime, Sunday in the second round of the 2012 River Hawk Classic.

With the draw, UMass Lowell stands at 1-0-1 entering next Saturday's match at home against No. 1 Saint Rose, the defending NCAA Division II champion.

LIU Post (1-0-1) hosts Georgian Court University Thursday at 4:00.

UMass Lowell opened the scoring in the 50th minute when Costa dropped off a pass to junior F Julia Donigian (Wakefield, Mass.) on the right side of the box, who blasted an attempt inside the far post.

The Pioneers answered a minute later, however, when freshman M Susanne Vistnes (Randaberg, Norway) broke free down the right flank and crossed to junior F Jeanine Ambrogi (Greenlawn, N.Y.) who headed home.

LIU Post snatched a 2-1 lead just two minutes later when Ambrogi attempted from the top of the box, which UMass Lowell goalkeeper Jane Hatzikonstantis (Tewksbury, Mass.) gloved away. Senior M Prudence Rydstrom (Islip, N.Y.), however, tucked home the rebound uncontested.

The River Hawks maintained their collective composure and it paid off in the 64th. Costa was the beneficiary this time when senior F Keanna Santos (Lakeville, Mass.) dropped off into her path, which Costa roped inside the right post form the top of the box.

UMass Lowell had several attempts in overtime, including a pair in the 100th minute when freshman M Selja Snorradottir (Reykjavik, Iceland) lashed over the bar from the top left corner of the box.

Shortly after, LIU Post was whistled for a foul at the top of the box and senior B Taylor Hartmann (Feeding Hills, Mass.) lashed a free kick on target, but senior GK Nicole Fierro (East Hampton, N.Y.) tipped over the bar.

LIU Post had a chance in the 102 which brought out the best in Hatzikonstantis. Vistnes took space along the top of the box and ripped a curling shot which Hatzikonstantis did well to glove over the bar and out of play.

Sophomore Brittany Russo (Danvers, Mass.) nearly struck in the 103rd when she attempted from the right side of the box for the par post, eliciting a diving stop from Fierro.

She seemingly won the match at the horn when she lofted an attempt from the left flank over the reach of Fierro, but the shot crossed the goal line after the horn sounded.

LIU Post had a 16-14 advantage on total shots, but those on target were even at 10-10. Hatzikonstantis had eight saves for UMass Lowell while Fierro stopped eight for LIU Post.
