Senior Cam Kneeland's (Rowley, Mass.) two-hit and three RBI showing in game one of Friday's double-header led the UMass Lowell baseball team to a split with New Haven, 7-4 and 4-11, at LeLacheur Park.

The River Hawks moved to 15-11-1 on the year and sit at 5-5-1 in the Northeast-10 and 2-3-0 in the Northeast Division. Following the split, the Chargers are now 14-7-1 overall, 6-3-1 in the NE-10 and 2-1-1 in the Southwest Division.

New Haven pushed across the day's first run in the top of the first. Starting pitcher Dallas Nunes (Easton, Mass.) hit Cory Carr (Jackson, N.J.) with one out, then surrendered a double to left field to Ryan Brockett (Guilford, Conn.), bringing Carr around to home.

The Chargers added three more runs to push their lead to 4-0.  The big hits were provided by Stephen Clout (Bristol, Conn.) and Andrew Johnson (Branford, Conn.), who knocked RBI singles to left field.

The River Hawks slashed the deficit in half in the bottom of the fourth, scoring on a passed ball and an RBI ground out by Kneeland.

UMass Lowell grabbed its first lead of the day in the bottom of the fifth. Rookie Jacob O'Keefe (Wellington, Mass.) started the rally with an RBI single to left field, plating Mark Sanborn (Hopkinton, Mass.) from third. Then, with the bases loaded and two outs, Kneeland ripped a two-run double down the left field line to take a 5-4 advantage.

The River Hawks added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth with a two-run single into right field by rookie Jimmy Ricoy (Lowell, Mass.).

Nunes battled through a rocky start to complete 6.1 innings of work on the mound and improve to 3-2 overall. He allowed nine hits, four runs—two earned—and struck out four. He was replaced by Mike Sloban (Merrimac, Mass.) who earned his first collegiate save with 2.2 innings on the mound. Sloban allowed two hits and struck out five.

Kneeland finished the opener 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored.

In the late game, New Haven mounted a 5-0 lead over the first four innings, keyed by RBI hits from Brendan O'Reilly (Devon, Pa.), Zach Collett (Westbrook, Maine) and Johnson.

UMass Lowell broke up the no-hitter and the shutout in the bottom of the fourth, scoring twice to cut the score to 5-2. Rookie Geoff DeGroot (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) laid down a bunt single, then came around on a double over the left fielder's head by James Katsiroubas (Milton, Mass.). Junior Pat Devlin (Tewksbury, Mass.) followed with a single to left field to plate Katsiroubas.

The rally was short-lived as the Chargers reeled off five runs in the top of the fifth, feeding off of five walks surrendered by River Hawk pitchers.

With the game out of reach, the River Hawks scrapped across a run in the ninth off of an RBI double by Greg Wilson (Medford, Mass.), settling the final score at 11-4.

UMass Lowell used six pitchers in the loss; the group allowed 11 hits and 15 walks.
