PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – Redshirt-sophomore Sean O'Leary (Foxboro, Mass.) recorded a hit and an RBI, as the UMass Lowell baseball team (1-5) fell, 10-2, against Indiana State (3-4) in the last game of the Snowbird Baseball Classic on Sunday afternoon.
"Credit to Brooks from Indiana State, he was fantastic on the mound," said Head Coach Nick Barese. "Defensively we played no where near well enough to win. We need to regroup and have a great week of practice."
Freshman Cal Chance (Wolcott, Conn.) also tallied an RBI and a hit in the contest, while freshman Jack Forgues (Leominster, Mass.) added a hit and a run. Senior Jacob Jette (Franklin, Mass.) got the start on the bump for UMass Lowell, pitching 4.2 innings with two strikeouts and zero earned runs in his outing. Sophomore Nolan Geisler (Bayonne, N.J.) went 2.1 innings with two strikeouts, as freshmen Colin Ducie (Plymouth, Mass.) and Josh Doney (Lynn, Mass.) each pitched one frame, collecting a strikeout.
The first inning was quick for both sides with Jette forcing a groundout to end the top of the inning. Staying sharp defensively, each team wrapped up the next frame in order to keep the game scoreless through two. Jette remained focused on the mound, as the senior tossed a big strikeout to close the top half of the third, bringing the River Hawks back up to bat. Senior Joseph DeLanzo (Nutley, N.J.) looked to spark UMass Lowell's offense after advancing to first base on a walk, however, the Sycamores followed with the final out of the frame.
The fielders on both teams locked things down once again, delivering back-to-back, 1-2-3 performances in the fourth. Indiana State's bats began to heat up in the fifth, though, as the visitors hit three home runs in the top half, jumping ahead 8-0. After a scoreless sixth inning, Indiana State pushed across another run for a 9-0 difference before Geisler closed the door with a strikeout to end the visitors' half in the seventh. Ducie relieved Geisler in the eighth inning, going three up, three down for a clean sheet. Although UMass Lowell put one on base after junior Ryan Strand (Goffstown, N.H.) knocked a single, the Sycamores worked out of the inning without allowing a run.
In the ninth inning, Indiana State expanded its lead to 10-0, before Doney, who entered for Ducie, wrapped up the frame on a strikeout swinging. Attempting to claw back late, Forgues got things going with a leadoff single, followed by an RBI from O'Leary and a one-run single from Chance, scoring graduate student Jorge Burgos (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic). Despite the late push, the Sycamores sealed the 10-2 result in the ninth.
The UMass Lowell baseball team looks ahead to a weekend series at LIU, starting on Saturday, February 28 in Brookville, N.Y., with the first pitch scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at LIU Baseball Stadium.
