Ali Ferraro (Kingston, N.Y.) hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning of game two to help UMass Lowell salvage a split, 3-4 and 4-3, at Le Moyne College in a Northeast-10 Conference softball twin bill Saturday at the Niland Athletic Complex.
With the split, UMass Lowell stands at 17-8 overall and 7-4 in the NE-10 entering Sunday's doubleheader at Saint Rose (12:00). Le Moyne is currently 10-20 overall and 4-6 in the Conference.
In the opener, Le Moyne overcame a 2-0 deficit with three runs in the third inning when junior Fran Kiernan hit a two-run double to right field while sophomore pitcher Sarah Harrison followed with a single to score Kiernan. The Dolphins added another run in the when senior 3B Kelcie Cashel singled down the left field line to score senior LF Kristin Brown.
UMass Lowell pulled one back in the fifth when junior 2B
Krista MacKenzie (Ipswich, Mass.) doubled to left center and scored when Boris followed with a single through the right side.
The River Hawks opened the scoring with two runs in the first inning behind a two-run double from senior C
Lindsi Panarelli (Shrewsbury, Mass.).
Freshman pitcher
Courtney Lanfranchi (Burlington, Mass.) took the loss to slip to 6-4 as she scattered 10 hits, four runs and one walk while striking out one. Harrison improved to 9-11 as she allowed three runs on eight hits and no walks while striking out 10.
MacKenzie led the UMass Lowell bats as she batted 3 for 3 with two runs while senior DH
Elyssa Boris (Gardner, Mass.) went 2 for 3 with one RBI.
Cashel went 3 for 4 with one run and one RBI while Harrison hit 2 for 3 with one RBI to lead Le Moyne. Kiernan went 1 for 2 with a walk.
In the nightcap, UMass Lowell again jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning when freshman RF
Ariana Darcy (Walkill, N.Y.) walked, stole second and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by MacKenzie. Boris followed with a solo home run.
The River Hawks grabbed a 3-1 lead in the fourth behind an RBI double by
Caelyn Ford (Dracut, Mass.). Le Moyne leveled in the fifth, however, behind RBI singles from Kiernan and freshman 2B Kristie Capuano.
In the sixth, Panarelli walked and Ford singled to set up what proved to be the game-winning run. Junior
Bri Mahoney (Billerica, Mass.) pinch ran for Panarelli and scored on Ferraro's sacrifice fly.
Ford batted 2 for 3 to lead UMass Lowell while Capuano batted 3 for 3 with one RBI for Le Moyne.
Boris improved to 11-4 this season as she allowed 11 hits, three runs and a walk while striking out two. Harrison (9-12) took the loss as she scattered five hits, one earned run and a walk while striking out two.
