Freshman F Kyle Williams broke a 3-3 deadlock 11:10 into the third period to lift the University of Maine over UMass Lowell, 4-3, Saturday night in a Hockey East clash in front of 4,262 at the Tsongas Center.
With the loss, UMass Lowell slipped to 2-4-1 overall and 1-3-1 in Hockey East entering next Friday's game against New Hampshire (7:05) and Sunday's at Massachusetts.
Maine snapped a seven-game slide with the victory and avenged UMass Lowell's 2-1 win Friday night. The Black Bears improved to 2-9-0 overall and 1-5-0 in Hockey East.
UMass Lowell opened the scoring 10:09 into the first period on a power play when junior F Derek Arnold (Foxboro, Mass.) took a pass into the slot from junior F Joe Pendenza (Wilmington, Mass.) and redirected inside the far post.
Maine stormed back with three straight goals, two of which in the first period. Playing shorthanded, senior D Mike Cornell released sophomore F Connor Leen on a breakaway down the left side, which he slapped past junior GK Doug Carr (Hanover, Mass.) at 12:53.
Senior F Adam Shemansky put the Black Bears ahead 2-1 at 17:10 when he put back the rebound from senior Nick Prior's shot which caromed off the post. Freshman Devin Shore put Maine 3-1 up 8:42 into the second when he put home the rebound from a saved shot by freshman F Ryan Lomberg.
UMass Lowell found its touch, however, and senior F Riley Wetmore (Swanton, Vt.) scored his second goal in two nights when he intercepted an errant clearance and sent a wrist shot past junior GK Martin Ouellette.
Pendenza leveled for UMass Lowell at 19:30 of the second period when he took a pass from freshman A.J. White (Dearborn, Mich.) and beat Ouellette one on one.
Williams scored the winner for Maine when redirected a slap-pass from Cornell.
UMass Lowell outshot Maine 30-22 as Carr had 18 saves and Ouellette 27 for the Black Bears.
