Colantone, Arnold, Wilson strike for River Hawks

No. 1 Boston College took advantage on three of five power plays to defeat No. 11/12 UMass Lowell, 6-3, Sunday in a Hockey East Clash at the Conte Forum.

With the loss, UMass Lowell slipped to 1-3-1 overall and 0-2-1 in Hockey East. The River Hawks have a 12-day layoff before hosting the University of Maine Friday and Saturday, Nov. 9-10 at the Tsongas Center.

Boston College earned its fourth straight win to improve to 4-1-0 overall and 4-1-0 in Hockey East.

UMass Lowell battled back from a 3-0 deficit with a pair of goals in the second period, the first at 7:40 when freshman F Michael Colantone (Cave Creek, Ariz.) took a pass from junior F Josh Holmstrom (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and drove home off a BC defender.

Four minutes later, the River Hawks capitalized on a power play to cut the deficit to 3-2. Twenty-six seconds after senior F Pat Mullane was whistled for a trip, junior F Derek Arnold (Foxboro, Mass.) one-timed from the left side of the cage off passes from juniors Joe Houk (Richboro, Pa.) and Chad Ruhwedel (San Diego, Calif.) from the right and left points.

The Eagles, however, erupted for two more goals to post a 5-2 cushion to end the period. The first came at 13:40 when freshman D Mike Matheson intercepted in the UMass Lowell half, then fed sophomore F Johnny Gaudreau on a two-on-one, who backhanded by junior G Doug Carr (Hanover, Mass.).

BC had a goal disallowed shortly after, but got its fifth at 17:00 on a power play when sophomore F Destry Straight tucked home out of a scramble from freshman Teddy Daugherty.

UMass Lowell remained in the mix, however, and sophomore F Scott Wilson (Oakville, Ont.) cut the deficit to 5-3. Freshman F Ryan McGrath (O'Fallon, Mo.) came around the net and flicked to Wilson who finished at the right post.

Houk nearly cut the lead to 5-4 in the third period on a 5-on-3, but was denied only by the post. BC put the game out of reach at 16:25, however, when senior F Steven Whitney broke down the right side and centered to Mullane, who touched home.

The Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 lead behind junior F Bill Arnold's goal 4:23 into the game as well as a pair of power play goals by junior F Kevin Hayes at 18:41 of the first period and 5:33 into the second, both of which assisted by Arnold.

UMass Lowell was outshot for the first time this season, 29-28, as Carr stopped 23 shots. Senior G Parker Milner had 25 saves for BC.
