Freshman F Meagan Elliott flicked home a cross from junior B Jaemie Fasanello in the 71st minute as Stonehill College defeated UMass Lowell, 1-0, Tuesday night in a Northeast-10 Conference women's soccer clash at Cushing Field.

With the loss, UMass Lowell slipped to 3-5-2 overall and 2-5-1 in the NE-10 entering Saturday's home match with Pace University (1:00). Stonehill improved to 4-2-3 overall and 3-2-3 in the Conference and hosts Assumption Saturday at 12:00.

Stonehill notched the winner when Fasanello crossed to Elliott just inside the top of the box, who redirected it inside the left post. Junior GK Jill Carlson (Lexington, Mass.) anticipated the pass going by Elliott, but was unable to recover for the save.

UMass Lowell nearly opened the scoring in the third minute when senior B Taylor Hartmann (Feeding Hills, Mass.) took a play-back and attempted to chip over Stonehill GK Amy Wheaton from 25 yards out, only for Wheaton to tip over the bar.

On the ensuing corner kick, senior B Casey Schulze (Chelmsford, Mass.) sidefooted from the top of the box, but her attempt was cleared off the line by senior B Sara Nagle.

Stonehill nearly doubled its lead in the 75th when sophomore M Jordan Bell tried her luck from the right channel to the near post, eliciting a diving stop from Carlson.

Stonehill outshot UMass Lowell 14-11 overall and 7-6 on target. The Skyhawks also had five corner kicks to UMass Lowell's one.

Carlson stopped six shots for the River Hawks while Wheaton had five saves for Stonehill.
