Biography
HERENDA ON WELCH: "Matt, again, will be targeted as one of the Northeast-10 Conference's premier 3-point shooters. On top of that he has worked offensively on improving his game in and around the paint. Matt has always brought a very competitive spirit to our program and as a senior captain, we will continue to look to him for his leadership skills. Matt came here in his first year and we won a NE-10 title and I am hopeful that he will leave as a champion as well.."
AS A JUNIOR: Played in 27 games for the River Hawks, with 24 starts • Averaged 11.5 ppg, 4.6 rpg and 0.8 bpg • Scored a season-high 22 points, including 6 of 10 from three point range, against Franklin Pierce (12/10) • Registered 15 points and nine rebounds in 74-60 win against Pace (1/14).
AS A SOPHOMORE: Started 26 of the 27 games • Was 19th in the NE-10 in scoring with 14.4 ppg • Averaged 5.1 rpg • Season-highs include 28 points against Concordia on Dec.18; and 11 rebounds at Le Moyne on Jan. 19.
AS A FRESHMAN: Joined the River Hawks for the second semester, making an immediate impact • Named Northeast-10 Freshman of the Week once • Saw action in 12 games off the bench with averages of 8.8 points and 3.9 rebounds per game • Had a season-best 18 points against Assumption in the first round of the NE-10 Tournament on Feb. 27 • Grabbed eight rebounds against Merrimack on Feb. 13 and five steals against the Warriors on March 13.
UNIVERSITY OF NEW HAMPSHIRE: Member of the Wildcats' football team • Was a redshirt during his freshman season (2008-09) • Went 9-for-11 with 107 passing yards along with two touchdowns in the Spring 09 Game.
LOWELL HIGH SCHOOL: Was a four-year varsity starter at Lowell H.S. • Merrimack Valley Conference Player of the Year in 2007 • Honored as team's Most Valuable Players all four seasons • Named All-MVC three times and set school record for most career games played (92) • Tallied his 1,000th career point as a junior • Also played baseball and football • Three-year varsity starter on the Red Raiders' football squad, where he earned All-Conference honors twice • Honor roll student.
PERSONAL: Younger of two sons of Sheila and Ken Welch of Lowell, Mass. • Lists the Celtics, Red Sox, Bruins and Patriots as his favorite teams • Names Tom Brady and Kevin Garnett as his favorite athletes • Says dunking against Central Catholic in 2007 and beating them for the first time in six years is his greatest sports moment • Majoring in Liberal Arts.
