River Hawks Kick Off Home Slate against New Haven, Merrimack

BOSTON, Mass. – After two weeks on the road, the UMass Lowell field hockey team (1-3) will kick off its home slate this week, hosting New Haven on Friday, September 11 at 6 p.m. and Merrimack (0-3) on Sunday, Sept. 13 at 1 p.m.

RIVER HAWK REWIND
The River Hawks faced two, top-11 opponents last week, visiting No. 3 Harvard and No. 11 Massachusetts. The team battled hard, only allowing more than one goal in one quarter throughout the two contests. Sophomore Haley Wernig (Franklin, Mass.) tallied a goal in a 5-1 setback at Harvard and classmate Alexa Guarneri (Hockessin, Del.) scored in a 3-1 decision at Massachusetts. Sophomore goalkeeper Megan MacMiller (Tarzana, Calif.) made a personal-best five saves in her first career start and complete games against the Minutewomen.

LEADING THE FLOCK
Six different River Hawks have scored one goal so far this season, while senior Florine Gerrits (Amstelveen, Netherlands) and sophomore Frédèrique van den Dungen (Rosmalen, Netherlands) have added two assists apiece. Sophomore goalkeepers Veerle Mous (Breda, Netherlands) and Megan MacMiller (Tarzana, Calif.) have logged nine and eight saves, respectively.

UMass Lowell is currently 1-0 against New Haven after earning a 14-0 win last season. The River Hawks are 28-6 all-time against Merrimack.

Veerle Mous was named America East Goalkeeper of the Week on Sept. 1 after logging a 0.00 GAA in 60 minutes of action at Stanford and UC Davis.

The River Hawks faced back-to-back nationally ranked opponents last week in No. 3 Harvard and No. 11 Massachusetts. Since 2021, the team has challenged 17 nationally ranked opponents with 11 of the 14 setbacks being decided by two goals or less.
