LOWELL, Mass. – UMass Lowell Director of Athletics Lynn Coutts recently announced the promotion of Marcus Williams to Associate Athletic Director of Sports Performance.
Â
Williams joined UMass Lowell in August of 2018 as the Head Sports Performance Coach before being named Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Performance in February of 2023.
Â
"Marcus is a dedicated leader who has made a meaningful impact on our student-athletes and staff since arriving at UMass Lowell," said Coutts. "He has built a strong culture within our sports performance program, and this promotion reflects both his hard work and the respect he has earned across our department. I am excited to see him continue to grow in this expanded role."
Â
In his role, Williams manages operations for two athletic performance facilities and the athletic refueling station, including overseeing staffing, scheduling, equipment planning, maintenance, and workflow optimization, all while supervising and developing a staff of seven sports performance professionals.
Â
"I would like to thank Lynn Coutts and Sandra Roecker for their guidance and support in helping me reach this leadership position," said Williams. "I'm excited to continue to build on the strong foundation of UMass Lowell Athletics and contribute to its growth as a premier athletic institution in my role."
Â
Alongside multiple athletic performance facilities, Williams also serves on the Athletic Leadership Team and contributes to departmental decision-making, while also acting as sports administrator for men's lacrosse. As the sports administrator, he helps provide program oversight, compliance coordination and operation planning, while effectively communicating with the coaches and staff.
Â
"I also want to recognize our sports performance team," added Williams. "Their hard work, professionalism and commitment to our student-athletes do not go unnoticed, and I'm incredibly appreciative of everything they do."
Â
As a member of the Student-Athlete Wellness Advancement Team (SWAT), Williams will also continue to collaborate with athletic healthcare, academics and the compliance staff, as well as sports administrators, to ensure student-athletes' needs are managed appropriately.
Â
A native of Port Chester, N.Y., Williams received his bachelor's degree in health and physical activities with a minor in fitness from the University of Pittsburgh in 2011. He went on to complete his master's in physical education with specialization in exercise science from Central Connecticut State University in 2016.
