River Hawks Battle To Final Minute, Fall at Binghamton
10/10/2026 3:47:00 PM | Men's Soccer
VESTAL, N.Y. – Junior Santiago Somorrostro (Nashua, N.H.) scored his third goal of the season, as the UMass Lowell men's soccer team (5-4-2, 1-2-0 AE) fell to the Binghamton Bearcats (2-6-4, 1-1-1 AE), 2-1, in a hard-fought road battle on Saturday afternoon.

"It's really disappointing we didn't come out and perform well today," commented Head Coac Kyle Zenoni. "It's my fault because I wasn't able to get the team prepared enough. I thought we lacked energy throughout the game and just were not sharp enough. Credit to Binghamton for the fight and energy they showed throughout the match. They were up for it and deserved to win. Our goal is to be a top six team and then a new season starts. We know how challenging our league is and if you don't show up on the day you will get punished. It wasn't good enough and it starts with me. The only thing I know what to do is start prepping for next match."

Â
Somorrostro, who scored on a free kick, was one of three River Hawks to tally a shot on goal in the contest. Junior Fredrik Moen (Sarpsborg, Norway) added two shots, with one on target, while junior Saihaj Kailay (Belleville, Ontario) contributed a shot on goal. In net, junior Moritz Aé (Leipzig, Germany) made four saves in the start.
Â
Â
Although Binghamton registered the first five shots of the game, UMass Lowell was up for the challenge on defense, as Aé made a key save only two minutes in, while the team added in a pair of blocked shots to keep the opposition off the board. Moments later, the River Hawks responded with their first scoring opportunity of the afternoon, as junior Fredrik Moen (Sarpsborg, Norway) fired off a shot on target, but the hosts' keeper was able to get in front of it. Only a minute later, the Bearcats capitalized on a fast break, finding the back of the net to jump in front, 1-0, in the 17th minute.
Â
Â
Picking up the pace, senior Ethan Agyare-Danso (Etobicoke, Canada) ripped a shot just over the net only minutes after the goal. Binghamton answered with two shots of their own, but an excellent sliding kick save by Aé, followed by a heads-up play from junior Sho Kinjo (Nara, Japan) to defend the open net, kept it a one-goal game heading into halftime.
Â
Â
Coming out of the break, UMass Lowell began to build momentum. Early in the second half, Somorrostro curled a shot towards the corner of the net, but a diving effort by the opposing keeper kept the junior from tying the game. Only five minutes later, with 54:33 on the clock, he earned another opportunity, and this time capitalized. Lining up for a free kick just outside the top of the box, the New Hampshire native laced a shot into the bottom right corner of the net, past the lunging goalkeeper, knotting the game up at 1-1 with 35 minutes to play.
Â
Â
Although the shots remained close in the final 30, the hosts struck in the 71st minute to seal the 2-1 decision.
Â
Â
Next up, the River Hawks return home to host the Bryant Bulldogs on Saturday, October 17. Opening kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Cushing Field.
