Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

River Hawks Fall at No. 17 Fairfield, 19-5

FAIRFIELD, CT. – Sophomore Colby Frigon (Providence, R.I.) tallied two assists, as the UMass Lowell men's lacrosse team (3-3) fell to the #17 Fairfield Stags (7-0), 19-5, on Saturday afternoon.

Although Frigon led the team with two points, five River Hawks were right behind him with a point each. Graduate student Garrett Murphy (Billerica, Mass.) opened the scoring for his squad, while senior Riley Lawhorn (Amherst, N.H.), sophomore Johnny Soi (Kerhonkson, N.Y.) and freshman Griffin Sumwalt (Aquebogue, N.Y.) each chipped in one. Rounding things out, sophomore Mitch Lanthaler (Mars, Pa.) scored the first goal of his career.  In net, freshman AJ True (Manchester, N.H.) and sophomore Carter O'Brien (Concord, Mass.) split time with each goalie making four saves.

The Stags started the game strong on the offensive end, scoring two goals in two minutes to take an early lead. Although True was able to make a save to keep the opposition from adding another with 11:51 on the clock, Fairfield was able to keep their scoring run going, adding seven to take a 9-0 lead into the second.

With momentum on their side, the Stags continued to build up their lead, adding five more to their total over the next nine minutes. With 5:15 on the clock, the River Hawks got on the board, using a goal off the stick of Murphy for their first tally of the day, but the hosts added three more to make it a 17-1 game at the break.

Coming out of the break, the River Hawks locked down on the defensive end, not allowing a goal for nearly seven minutes of action. After the Stags scored to end the scoreless stretch, the UMass Lowell offense began to hit its stride, as Sumwalt struck with 6:48 remaining, before Soi and Lawhorn each added once less than a minute apart, cutting the deficit to 18-4 entering the final period.

In the fourth, despite Fairfield adding to their lead with one more goal, UMass Lowell continued to fight, as Lanthaler found the back of the net for the first time in his career. The visitors were unable to add anymore though, sealing the 19-5 final.

Next up, the River Hawks begin conference play when they welcome the Binghamton Bearcats to town on Friday, March 14. The opening faceoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Cushing Field.
