SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Senior Emily Tow (North Kingstown, R.I.) went 2-for-3 on the day with one RBI, as UMass Lowell (0-5) fell, 7-1, versus SIUE (2-3) in the final game of the UTSA Invitational on Sunday morning at Roadrunner Field.
"Tough game today," said Head Coach Jen Starek. "It was valuable to experience a lot of different aspects this weekend. We will continue to build off of it."
Tow and freshman Callie Stubbs (Salem, Ore.) each earned extra-base hits in the contest. Freshman Emily Baumes (Rexford, N.Y.) continued to shine this weekend, as she went 2-for-4 at the plate.
Junior Giana LaCedra (Tyngsboro, Mass.) received the start in the circle, going three innings and striking out two. Sophomore Olivia DeCitise (Troy, N.Y.) came in for relief, throwing the remaining three innings and also striking out two.
Baumes got the contest started with a single up the middle for the River Hawks. Fellow freshman, Avery Spinello-Branch (Lorton, Va.) followed with a bunt single, but UMass Lowell was unable to scratch a run across. In the home half of the first inning, the Cougars jumped in front, putting three runs on the scoreboard.
SIUE continued its offense in the bottom of the second, adding on two more runs to increase the lead to 5-0.
In the top of the third, Baumes ripped a single up the middle and then stole second. A ground out from Spinello-Branch gave Baumes enough time to reach third, putting her in scoring position. Aggressive in the count, Tow jumped on the first pitch she saw, launching a double to right center and sending Baumes home to cut the difference to 5-1.
Stubbs earned the lone hit for the River Hawks in the fourth, as she soared a double to left field. SIUE would answer back with two runs in the bottom of the inning, extending the margin to 7-1.
Tow registered the final hit for UMass Lowell in the fifth with a single up the middle. The River Hawks and the Cougars remained scoreless for the rest of the game, resulting in a 7-1 victory for SIUE.
Up next, the River Hawks will travel to Buies Creek, N.C. for the Camel Invitational taking place on February 14-16 at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium. UMass Lowell will first face Campbell on Friday, February 14 with first pitch scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
