BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Freshman
Emily Baumes (Rexford, N.Y.) went 2-for-3 at the plate, as UMass Lowell (0-6) fell, 4-3, at Campbell (6-1) in the team's first game of the Camel Invitational on Friday evening at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium.
"Exciting night of softball," said Head Coach Jen Starek. "It was a very close game, we just need to clean up a few things."
Baumes recorded a double and earned an RBI on the day. Freshman
Avery Spinello-Branch (Lorton, Va.) also went 2-for-3, while sophomore
Isabel Quintanilla (Puyallup, Wash.) was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Three River Hawks had stolen bases, including Baumes, freshman
Kate Hardy (Alexandria, Va.) and sophomore
Alaina Santoli (Lovettsville, Va.).
Sophomore
Olivia DeCitise (Troy, N.Y.) would get UMass Lowell started in the circle, throwing 4.1 innings with four strikeouts. Junior
Giana LaCedra (Tyngsboro, Mass.) stepped in to pitch the remaining 1.2 innings and struck out one.
In the lead-off spot for the River Hawks, Baumes delivered in the top of the first, as she doubled down the left field line. Senior
Emily Tow (North Kingstown, R.I.) would reach first on a fielder's choice, followed by a walk from Hardy. Quintanilla now up at the plate, ripped a single through the left side to get the River Hawks on the board early with a 1-0 lead.
More action came in the top of the third when the River Hawks benefited from the Camels' mistakes. Santoli crossed home plate on a throwing error to put UMass Lowell up 2-0.
Campbell put together some offense in the bottom of the fourth, recording one run generated by an outfield single to cut the difference to 2-1.
Santoli used a walk as an opportunity in the top of the fifth to get on and then immediately stole second to get into scoring position. Baumes came through with a single to left to score Santoli, increasing UMass Lowell's lead to 3-1. In the home half of the inning, the Camels answered back with a homer down the left field line to even the score at 3-3.
Back-to-back hits from the Camels helped to earn another run in the bottom of the sixth. A single up the middle was what pushed the go-ahead run home, as Campbell grabbed its first lead of the game at 4-3.
Spinello-Branch found success in the final inning, as she singled up the middle, but the River Hawks were not able to create another run, falling to the Camels, 4-3.
UMass Lowell is back tomorrow for a matchup versus Eastern Kentucky at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium with first pitch scheduled for 9:30 a.m.
