River Hawks Cruise to 15-7 Win Over Mercyhurst

LOWELL, Mass. –  Freshman Danny Burke (Eden Prairie, Minn.) tallied a career-high six points, as the UMass Lowell men's lacrosse team (2-1) soared to a 15-7 victory over Mercyhurst on Friday afternoon.

"We're always happy to have more than the other guys," said head coach Drew Kelleher. "Mercyhurst is a really well-coached program. I'm proud of my guys to play three games in seven days to start and finish 2-1. This game got moved up two days early so I'm really, really proud of them."

Burke, who scored three goals alongside three assists, was one of eight River Hawks to record at least a point. Sophomore Johnny Soi (Kerhonkson, N.Y.) scored a career-high four goals, while freshman Griffin Sumwalt (Aquebogue, N.Y.) earned the first two goals of his career and an assist. Sophomore Jayden Consigli (Franklin, Mass.) and freshman Alex Lafreniere (Chelmsford, Mass.) both chipped in two goals, graduate student Garrett Murphy (Billerica, Mass.) added a goal and an assist, sophomore Colby Frigon (Providence, R.I.) recorded two assists, and senior Riley Lawhorn (Amherst, N.H.) rounded the scoring out with a goal. In net, freshman AJ True (Manchester, N.H.) made seven saves in 60 minutes of action.

The River Hawks caught fire to open the game, opening the scoring less than three minutes when Sumwalt tallied the first goal of his career. The defense impressed throughout the entire first quarter, not allowing a goal, while True made saves on the two shots he faced. Meanwhile, with under five on the clock, Soi scored back-to-back goals, followed by a goal from Lawhorn at 1:51, giving the team a 4-0 lead after the first quarter.

The hosts continued to dominate to start the second quarter, as Burke scored two goals in under 40 seconds to take a commanding 6-0 lead. The scoring didn't stop there though, with Consigli finding the back of the net 35 seconds later before a goal by Murphy made it an eight-goal lead only four minutes into the quarter. The visitors finally struck, scoring twice over the next five minutes, but the River Hawks countered only moments later with Sumwalt's second goal of the day, putting his squad up 9-2 at the break.

Coming out of the locker room, both sides emphasized defense, as neither team could capitalize on a scoring opportunity for well over seven minutes. The Lakers eventually found the back of the net, striking at the 7:30 mark, but Soi responded two minutes later with his third of the afternoon, keeping the seven-goal differential. Despite a strong defensive effort by the River Hawks, Mercyhurst added two more, cutting the lead to 10-5 heading into the final quarter.

Looking to seal their second win in a week, Consigli started the fourth strong for the River Hawks, scoring only 50 seconds into the period. Trying to pull off a comeback, the visitors added two goals over the next three minutes but UMass Lowell held off any further attempts, holding the opposition scoreless while adding four goals in the final five minutes, sealing the 15-7 decision.

Next up, the River Hawks head to Staten Island to take on Wagner on Saturday, February 22. Opening faceoff is set for 12 p.m. at Hameline Field.
