River Hawks Take Down Wagner, 13-12, For First Road Win

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Freshman Danny Burke (Eden Prairie, Minn.) recorded a game-high four goals, as the UMass Lowell men's lacrosse team (3-1) battled for a 14-13 victory over the Wagner Seahawks (0-4) on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the River Hawks are off to the best start in Division I program history.

"Today was a huge road win for our guys," said head coach Drew Kelleher. "Wagner played incredibly hard and made us earn everything. I'm proud of our guys overcoming some injuries and a tough week with the weather. We're excited to get back on Cushing this week and get better."

Burke, who has recorded at least three points in every game this season, was one of six River Hawks to record at least a goal. Also putting together a four-point day, sophomore Jayden Consigli (Franklin, Mass.) tallied two goals and two assists, while sophomore Johnny Soi (Kerhonkson, N.Y.) finished with a hat trick. Senior Riley Lawhorn (Amherst, N.H.) chipped in with two goals, freshman Griffin Sumwalt (Aquebogue, N.Y.) added a goal and an assist, and graduate student Garrett Murphy (Billerica, Mass.) rounded things out with a goal. In net, freshman AJ True (Manchester, N.H.) finished with 11 saves.

The River Hawks came out firing to open the game, using a goal off the stick of Sumwalt to take the 1-0 lead only a minute into the match. Although the Seahawks responded with their first score at 12:41, the River Hawks took control of the game, scoring three straight, including two in 15 seconds by Soi and Lawhorn, to own a 4-1 lead with just over five minutes on the clock. The hosts responded moments later to make it a two-score game, but a goal by Burke in the final seconds gave UMass Lowell a 5-2 lead after one.

Both sides locked down on defense to start the second quarter, with Wagner scoring the lone goal in the first seven minutes of the period. Despite a strong defensive presence from the River Hawks, the Seahawks found their footing, scoring three more goals to take a one-goal lead, 6-5, with 3:57 on the clock. The visitors didn't let the score stay that way for long though, as Murphy, Burke, and Lawhorn all added goals in two minutes, giving their squad an 8-6 lead heading into halftime.

Coming out of the break, Wagner struck first in the opening minutes to pull back within one. UMass Lowell was quick to counter, as Consigli recorded an assist on two straight goals by Soi to make it a 10-7 game, the River Hawk's largest lead since the start of the second quarter. Looking to start a comeback, the Seahawks tallied two more, and although Consigli struck again, this time with 4:35 on the clock, the hosts added one more to make it a one-score difference, 11-10, entering the fourth.

It didn't take long for the River Hawks to open the fourth quarter scoring, as Burke struck only 45 seconds in to extend his squad's lead. The defense proceeded to take over, keeping the opposition off the board while setting up Burke for another goal with just under eight minutes to go. Despite two goals from Wagner cutting the score to 13-12, the UMass Lowell defense held strong in the final minute, sealing the victory for the visitors.

Next up, the River Hawks head to Maryland for a neutral site match against Queens University of Charlotte on Sunday, March 2. Opening faceoff is set for noon at Beldon Field in Towson, Md.
