Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

River Hawks Soar to 17-8 Victory Over Merrimack

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Junior Macy Shultz (Adams, N.Y.) tallied a career-high six points, as the UMass Lowell women's lacrosse team (2-0) cruised to a 17-8 victory over the Merrimack Warriors (0-1) on Wednesday night.

"I thought we were more consistent tonight," said head coach Lisa Miller. "We dealt with their changing defenses and were able to get a lot of people involved. A good team effort."

Shultz, who also reached a new career-best with five goals, was one of ten River Hawks to record a point. Sophomore Chloe Bowers (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) finished with three goals and two assists, junior Grace Lydon (Rowley, Mass.) added three goals and an assist, freshman Georgia Ruscitti (Toronto, Ontario) recorded a personal-best three assists, and sophomore Jillian Goldie (Owen Sound, Ontario) chipped in a goal and two assists. Rounding things out, senior Jade Catlin (Middletown, Md.) and junior Audra Hansen (Stamford, Ct.) added two points, freshman Gigi Gill (Brighton, Mich.) tallied her first career goal and assist, senior Megan Milkowich (Watertown, N.Y.) found the back of the net, and freshman Erin McDevitt (Portland, Ore.) chipped in with her first career assist.

The River Hawks got to work right away, using a goal by Bowers at the 12:24 mark to take the early lead. Less than a minute later, Lydon struck for the first time before finding the back of the net again with just under 10 minutes on the clock. UMass Lowell continued to attack, as Goldie, Shultz, and Hansen all added one of their own to make it 6-0 late in the first. Although the Warriors got on the board with just over two minutes remaining, Catlin struck in the final seconds to make it 7-1 after one.

Picking up where they left off, Catlin fired a free-position shot past the keeper just over a minute into the quarter to make it a seven-goal advantage. The Warriors netted their second at the 11:57 mark, but the River Hawks countered with a 4-0 scoring stretch, highlighted by two off the stick of Shultz, to take a commanding 12-2 lead late in the first half. The hosts scored again, though, with six seconds remaining, cutting the deficit to 12-3 at halftime.

Coming out of the break, both teams locked down on defense, as neither side converted on a scoring opportunity for nearly five minutes. The Warriors eventually opened up the scoring in the second half at the 10:26 mark in the third but, the River Hawks answered almost immediately, as Bowers completed her hat trick just over a minute later. The back-and-forth battle continued throughout the third, with UMass Lowell adding one more off the stick of Shultz to make it 14-4 heading into the final period.

Looking to make a comeback in the final quarter, Merrimack tallied four of the next five scores to make it a seven-goal game. The River Hawks, however, fended off any further attempts from the opposition, using goals from Milkowich and Gill to seal the 17-8 victory.

Next up, the River Hawks welcome the LIU Sharks to Lowell for the home opener on Saturday, February 15. Opening draw is set for 11 a.m. at Cushing Field.
