Strong Defensive Effort Propels River Hawks to 15-6 Win Over LIU

AMESBURY, Mass. – Senior Jade Catlin (Middletown, Md.) broke the program's all-time points record with a five-point day, as the UMass Lowell women's lacrosse team (3-0) took down the defending NEC Champions LIU (0-2) at the Maples Center on Saturday afternoon.

"First I'd like to publicly thank everyone who made the move indoors happen," said head coach Lisa Miller. "A testament to our department's ability to adapt and adjust to face the challenging conditions and weather. Second, a big thank you to the parent groups who gave up the opportunity to watch their daughters play so they could play. LIU is a good, competitive, well-coached group and forced us to adjust several times. It was good to see our kids play assertively early, adjust situationally, and respond positively to runs."

Catlin, who was all over the box score with four goals, one assist, three ground balls, and a career-high five caused turnovers, was one of eight River Hawks to tally a point on the day. Right behind her, sophomore Chloe Bowers (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) recorded a hat trick, sophomore Jillian Goldie (Owen Sound, Ontario) added two goals and an assist, and junior Macy Shultz (Adams, N.Y.) chipped in a goal and two assists. Juniors Grace Lydon (Rowley, Mass.) and Audra Hansen (Stamford, Ct.) each found the back of the net twice, while freshman Georgia Ruscitti (Toronto, Ontario) tallied two assists. Rounding out the scoring, sophomore Bronwyn Hilbert (Lancaster, Pa.) contributed with her first goal of the young season.

It didn't take very long for the River Hawks to capture the lead, as Bowers ripped a shot past the Sharks' keeper to make it a 1-0 game only 17 seconds in. LIU responded, evening the score less than two minutes later, but goals from Goldie and Catlin helped UMass Lowell recapture the lead, this time at 3-1, with five minutes remaining in the first. Although moments later the visitors cut the deficit to one, Catlin went to work, scoring twice in 28 seconds, followed by a woman-up goal from Goldie with under a minute remaining, giving the hosts a 6-2 lead after one.

The second quarter proved to be a defensive battle, as neither side picked up a goal for nearly ten minutes. Finally, with six minutes until the break, Goldie found Shultz open in front of the net, setting the junior up for her first goal of the afternoon. Meanwhile, the UMass Lowell defense executed their game plan perfectly, holding the Sharks scoreless for the entire period, thanks to two saves from Kuhn, while forcing multiple turnovers and shot clock violations, to keep a five-goal lead, 7-2, heading into halftime.

Although LIU scored the first two goals of the quarter to make it a three-score game, the River Hawks were up for the battle, using goals from Lydon and Hansen to extend their lead back to five with 6:16 on the clock. The Sharks, though, added one more to make it 9-5 heading into the final quarter.

A quick back-and-forth battle broke out in the opening minutes of the fourth, as Catlin struck again before the opposition countered with one of their own in less than two minutes. The River Hawks, however, would not allow the visitors to pull any closer, going on a 5-0 scoring run, highlighted by Catlin's record-breaking 138th career point on an assist to Hansen, to seal the 15-6 victory.

Next up, the River Hawks stay in-state when they head to North Easton to take on the Stonehill Skyhawks on Wednesday, February 19. Opening draw is set for 3 p.m. at W.B. Mason Stadium.
