River Hawks Face 14-9 Setback Against Holy Cross

WORCESTER, Mass. – Freshman Alex Lafreniere (Chelmsford, Mass.) tallied a game-high four points, as the UMass Lowell men's lacrosse team (1-1) fell to the Holy Cross Crusaders (2-1), 14-9, on Tuesday afternoon.

Lafreniere, who collected his first hat trick alongside an assist, was one of six River Hawks to tally a point. Behind him, sophomore Colby Frigon (Providence, R.I.) added a hat trick of his own, while freshman Danny Burke (Eden Prairie, Minn.) totaled three assists. Sophomore Jayden Consigli (Franklin, Mass.) chipped in with a goal and an assist, while senior Riley Lawhorn (Amherst, N.H.) and sophomore James Donnelly (Ottawa, Ontario) each scored a goal. In net, freshman AJ True (Manchester, N.H.) made 17 saves, a new career-high, in 60 minutes of action.

Although Holy Cross got out to a quick start, scoring five goals in just over nine minutes to own a 5-0 lead, the River Hawks did not back down. Only 33 seconds after the Crusaders' goal, Donnelly got his squad on the board, lacing a shot past the opposing keeper to cut the deficit to four. Both sides proceeded to lock down on defense, with neither side finding the back of the net for nearly four minutes. However, with 1:28 on the clock, Lawhorn found an opening, tallying his sixth goal of the young season, making it 5-2 heading into the second period.

UMass Lowell's defense continued to lock up the opposition, not allowing a goal for over half the quarter. Meanwhile, the offense continued to gain momentum, as Lafreniere tallied his first goal of the night to pull his team within two. Holy Cross finally struck again, extending their lead back to three, but the River Hawks countered only minutes later when Burke found Lafreniere open, setting the rookie up for his second of the game. The back-and-forth battle continued, but neither side could strike in the final minutes, keeping the score at 6-4 heading into halftime.

Coming out of the break, the Crusaders were quick to strike, extending their lead with a goal at the 14:20 mark.  The River Hawks, however, responded when Lafreniere tallied his third score of the night less than a minute and a half later, with an assist from Consigli. It didn't take long for UMass Lowell to strike again, this time coming off the stick of Frigon, and although Holy Cross added one more, back-to-back goals by Frigon and Consigli evened the score at 8-8 with just under eight minutes on the clock. The hosts locked down on defense, though, not allowing a goal the remainder of the period while adding two of their own to take a 10-8 lead into the fourth.

Despite two goals by the Crusaders to start the fourth, the River Hawks continued to fight as they attempted to mount a comeback. With 5:59 to play, Frigon struck for the third time on the night, thanks to the assist from Burke. Holy Cross, however, would not allow UMass Lowell to get any closer, sealing the 14-9 decision.

Next up, the River Hawks return home to take on the Mercyhurst Lakers on Sunday, February 16. Opening faceoff is scheduled for noon at Cushing Field.
