LOWELL, Mass. – Sophomore
Abbey Lindsey (Staten Island, N.Y.) posted a team high of 13 points, as UMass Lowell (3-18, 1-8 AE) fell 56-48 to America East opponent UMBC (10-10, 3-5 AE) on Saturday afternoon at Costello Athletic Center.
"I think quarters two, three and four were really solid offensively," said Head Coach
Denise King. "We definitely have some things to figure out in the first quarter, but for our team to fight back and win quarters two, three and four, I'm really proud of them for that."
Lindsey went 6-for-12 from the field, while grabbing three rebounds, two steals and one assist. Sophomore
Maddie Rice (Charlottesville, Va.) followed with 10 points, two rebounds, two assists and two steals. As a team, the River Hawks outshot the Retrievers from the floor, 38.0% to 33.3%.
UMBC quickly controlled the game, scoring 18 points, before UMass Lowell could hit a shot. Junior
Sophie Baydanov (Vienna, Austria) pushed her way through the paint to record the first points for the River Hawks with 55 seconds left in the first quarter. Freshman
Nia Chima (Toronto, Ontario) also found the backboard to tally a layup with 10 seconds on the clock, as the contest headed into the second quarter with the Retrievers in front, 23-4.
In the second quarter, the River Hawks settled in, outscoring the Retrievers, 13-11. Chima and Rice would string shots together at 6:11 to cut UMBC's lead to 26-10. Baydanov finished the half on a much needed three-point play, as she hit a shot at the buzzer and drew the foul. At the half, UMBC continued to lead, 34-17.
The River Hawks would outscore the Retrievers again in the third quarter, 16-12. UMass Lowell concluded this quarter with a large scoring stretch of nine points, including a nothing-but-net three-pointer from senior
Amina Kameric (Seattle, Wash.) with 44 seconds to play.
A six-point run in the fourth quarter would help the River Hawks to outscore the Retrievers for the third quarter in a row, 15-10. Lindsey totaled seven points this quarter, with a flawless jumper to end the contest, as eight seconds were showing on the clock. The River Hawks battled back from the first quarter, but it was not enough to take down UMBC, as they fell 56-48 to the Retrievers.
Up next, the River Hawks will take on Binghamton at Costello Athletic Center on Thursday, February 6 with tipoff scheduled for 6 p.m.
