LOWELL, Mass. – Sophomore Abbey Lindsey (Staten Island, N.Y.) recorded a team best of 13 points, as UMass Lowell (3-19, 1-9 AE) fell 65-52 to America East opponent Binghamton (12-11, 4-6 AE) on Thursday evening at Costello Athletic Center.
"Another slow start," said Head Coach Denise King. "I thought we did a pretty decent job of prep this week, in terms of preparing for their zone. I also thought we had some solid spurts of offensive production throughout the game."
Sophomore Maddie Rice (Charlottesville, Va.) earned 10 points, six rebounds, four steals and three assists on the day. Freshman Nia Chima (Toronto, Ontario) played some big minutes to earn nine points, eight rebounds and two assists. As a unit, the River Hawks outshot the Bearcats from beyond the three point line, 37.5% to 36.4%.
In the first quarter, the River Hawks were able to string together four points, including an appealing jumper from Lindsey at 5:47 as the Bearcats led by two, 8-6. Binghamton finished the quarter on a high note earning six points in a row to head into the second quarter, 22-11.
The River Hawks outscored Binghamton in the second quarter, 13-10, highlighted by three field goals by Rice. UMass Lowell would also grab the largest scoring stretch of the quarter, sinking seven points in a row. Junior Sophie Baydanov (Vienna, Austria) played a big role, as she forced a Binghamton timeout with a timely three-pointer at 7:16, pulling the River Hawks within four points. Binghamton, however, held the 32-24 lead at the break.
Although the Bearcats opened the third with three quick points, UMass Lowell earned the largest scoring stretch of the quarter with six straight points, as the River Hawks strung together three memorable plays. Sophomore Rayne Durant (New Haven, Conn.) hit a strong layup at 9:10, followed by a pleasing jumper from Rice at 8:20 with a brisk layup from Lindsey at 7:41 to put the River Hawks within five, as the Bearcats led 35-30. Binghamton responded, going on a 7-2 run, but a 9-4 run by the River Hawks made it an eight-point game heading into the fourth.
The final quarter would begin with a score of 49-41 with Binghamton in the lead. Durant quickly claimed a three-point play as she drew a foul on a successful layup at 9:45. Although moments later Baydanov added a triple to make it a six-point game, a late scoring run by the Bearcats prevented the River Hawks from pulling any closer, sealing the 65-52 final.
The River Hawks will be back on Thursday, February 13 for a morning matchup scheduled for 11 a.m. at UAlbany in SEFCU Arena.
