Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

River Hawks Fall to NJIT, 83-62

NEWARK, N.J. – Fifth year Quinton Mincey (Upper Marlboro, Md.) recorded a team-high 18 points, as the UMass Lowell men's basketball team (14-8, 3-4 AE) fell to the NJIT Highlanders (5-17, 2-5 AE), 83-62, on Thursday night.

Joining Mincey with double-digit scoring were freshman Martin Somerville (Bowie, Md.), who totaled 15 points and seven rebounds, and fifth year Max Brooks (Waldorf, Md.), who added 11 points alongside five rebounds and three blocks.

The River Hawks got on the board first, using baskets from Somerville and Mincey to jump in front early. The Highlanders retaliated with five of their own, and although Brooks sank his first bucket to retake the lead, the hosts put together a 9-0 scoring run to own a 14-6 advantage with 13:53 on the clock. UMass Lowell answered swiftly with another basket from Brooks, followed by a triple from Mincey and a layup from Somerville to make it a one-point game, but a 10-2 stretch gave NJIT a 24-15 lead midway through the first.

Looking to chip away at the lead, senior Quincy Clark (Columbus, Ohio) bolted to the basket for a layup before Mincey sank two free throws to make it a two-score game.
The opposition countered again, though, scoring eight of the next 11 to own a double-digit lead. With just under four minutes remaining in the half, fifth year Caleb Murphy (Atlanta, Ga.) scored his first basket as a River Hawk. Despite the Highlanders adding four straight, the River Hawks ended the half on a 6-2 stretch, kickstarted by a layup from Brooks, to cut the deficit to 38-30 at the break.

The River Hawks got straight to work in the second half, as only 14 seconds in
senior Cam Morris III (Alexander City, Ala.) found Somerville open beyond the arc. Just over a minute later, fifth year Yuri Covington (Wilkes-Barre, Pa.) added two points, cutting the NJIT lead to 38-35. Building back their lead, the hosts put up 10 of the game's next 13 points, and although the River Hawks responded with five points in 26 seconds, ten straight by the Highlanders made it a 15-point game with 12:24 to play.

UMass Lowell refused to back down, using a triple from senior Xzavier Lino (Phoenix, Ariz.) and two buckets from Mincey to make it 58-50 with just over 10 minutes to play. However, NJIT answered immediately with four straight baskets to make it 67-51. The River Hawks continued to battle in the final seven minutes but could not complete a comeback, sealing the 83-62 decision.

Next up, the River Hawks will continue the road trip
as they head to Baltimore to take on the UMBC Retrievers on Saturday, February 1. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena.
