River Hawks Use Hot Shooting In First Half to Take Down UMBC, 83-67

BALTIMORE, Md. – Fifth year Quinton Mincey (Upper Marlboro, Md.) scored a game-high 26 points and recorded a career-high 17 rebounds, as the UMass Lowell men's basketball team (15-8, 4-4 AE) bested the UMBC Retrievers (11-12, 3-5 AE), 83-67, on Saturday afternoon.

Mincey, who sank four triples on the afternoon, was one of four River Hawks to reach double-digit scoring. Behind him, fifth year Max Brooks (Waldorf, Md.) tallied 17 points, while fifth year Yuri Covington (Wilkes-Barre, Pa.) chipped in with 16 points. Rounding things out, freshman Martin Somerville (Bowie, Md.) finished the day with 15 points, including going 4-5 from deep.

It didn't take long for the River Hawks to get on the board, as Mincey sank a contested jumper only 16 seconds in. The Retrievers built up a small lead though, using a 9-2 stretch over three minutes to capture the lead, 9-4. Senior Xzavier Lino (Phoenix, Ariz.) countered with his first basket of the afternoon, and Somerville sank his first three, but back-to-back triples by UMBC gave them their largest lead of the night. Retaliating almost immediately, the River Hawks erupted from beyond the arc, sinking three straight from downtown as part of an 11-3 burst to jump on top, 20-19, with 9:23 on the clock.

The back-and-forth battle continued throughout the first half, with the hosts once again jumping in front, this time thanks to two layups from Marlon Short and a trey by Bryce Johnson. Looking to regain momentum, UMass Lowell caught fire from deep again, as Somerville connected for his fourth triple and Mincey added two of his own, igniting a 14-5 scoring outburst by the visitors to make it 36-31 with 4:37 remaining in the half. Although the Retrievers made it a one-possession game moments later, the River Hawks ended the half strong, going on an 8-0 scoring run to make it 46-36 at the break.

The River Hawks came out of the gates firing to start the second half, holding the opposition scoreless for nearly four minutes while adding seven of their own, kickstarted by a tough layup by Covington. The visitors continued to push their lead, and despite five points from UMBC over the next three minutes, UMass Lowell answered with seven including another deep ball, this time from Covington, to take their largest lead so far, 65-47, with just over ten minutes to play.

In the final minutes, UMBC continued to look for a way to complete a comeback, starting with a quick four points in 30 seconds. The River Hawks had answers for them every time though, outscoring the Retrievers 18-16 the rest of the way, sealing the 83-67 victory.

Next up, the River Hawks go back on the road, this time heading to New York for a match with the Binghamton Bearcats on Thursday, February 6. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:07 p.m. at the Events Center in Vestal, N.Y.
