River Hawks Fall to UAlbany, 10-7, in Defensive Battle

ALBANY, N.Y. –  Junior Jade Catlin (Middletown, Md.) tallied three goals in the first quarter, as the UMass Lowell women's lacrosse team (11-5, 2-3 AE) fell to the UAlbany Great Danes (5-9, 4-1 AE), 10-7, on Saturday afternoon.

"It was a defensive battle today," said Head Coach Lisa Miller. "UAlbany is well-coached, and they made some defensive adjustments that slowed us down on the offensive side of the ball. The defense played lights out and gave us opportunities to close the gap. We'll get back at it on Tuesday for our final regular season game."

Catlin, who tallied her tenth hat trick of the season, was one of four River Hawks to tally three points. Joining her with three goals was sophomore Macy Shultz (Adams, N.Y.), who also caused a turnover. Freshman Jillian Goldie (Owen Sound, Ontario) added a game-high three assists, while sophomore Grace Lydon (Rowley, Mass.) chipped in with a goal and two assists. In net, freshman Alexa Kuhn (Rocky Point, N.Y.) made ten saves.

Although the hosts got on the board first with a goal 15 seconds in, it didn't take long for the River Hawks to respond, thanks to a goal from Catlin off the assist from Lydon at the 13:27 mark. Less than 30 seconds later, UMass Lowell struck again, this time off the stick of Lydon, to give the squad a 2-1 lead. The Great Danes responded with a free-position goal, but Catlin tallied one of her own, retaking the lead, 3-2, with 10 minutes to go. After four minutes of scoreless action, UAlbany struck twice in a minute to jump ahead 4-3, but with under two minutes remaining in the first, Catlin's third goal of the afternoon evened the score at 4-4 after one quarter.

The second quarter was a defensive battle, as neither side found the back of the net for well over eight minutes. The River Hawks' strong defensive performance was highlighted by three saves from Kuhn and a caused turnover by graduate student Julia Napolitano (Oakdale, N.Y.) to keep the opposition off the board. With 6:26 remaining in the half, Shults fired a shot past the keeper, breaking the scoreless drought and putting her team back on top, 5-4. UAlbany wouldn't back down, retaliating with one of their own at the 3:21 mark to send the game into the break knotted up at 5-5.

UMass Lowell started the second half strong, keeping the Great Danes off the board for nearly five minutes. However, UAlbany began to find their rhythm on offense, stringing together three goals in five minutes to take an 8-5 lead with 6:05 to play. Moments later, the River Hawks countered as freshman Jillian Goldie (Owen Sound, Ontario) dished a pass to Shultz, who buried her shot for her second goal, cutting the deficit to two with 3:48 remaining. Two minutes later, the Great Danes added one more to take a 9-6 lead heading into the final period.

Shultz got the scoring started in the fourth quarter, completing her hat trick off the assist from Goldie with 10:33 remaining in the game. Meanwhile, the defense kept the opposition from reaching double-digit for nearly ten minutes, but a strike with 5:27 left gave the Great Danes a three-goal buffer, sealing the 10-7 final.

Next up, the River Hawks will finish the regular season at home when they take on the Vermont Catamounts. Before the game, the team will host a Senior Day ceremony to honor their seven seniors.
