River Hawks Earn First Postseason Berth With 16-11 Win Over Vermont

LOWELL, Mass. – Senior Megan Brockbank (Bayport, N.Y.) tallied a team-high four goals, as the UMass Lowell women's lacrosse team (12-5, 3-3 AE) earned a 16-11 victory over the Vermont Catamounts (8-8, 1-5 AE) to clinch their first America East Playoff berth in program history.

"I thought it was a good team win," said Head Coach Lisa Miller. "It's overall been a good season, we've grown a lot. I thought Rachel Stax had a great game today. She put us in a position where we actually had the ball more off the draw circle. A lot of people contributed today."

Brockbank, who added two assistswas one of seven goal-scorers for the River Hawks. Behind her, freshman Jillian Goldie (Owen Sound, Ontario) tallied three goals and an assist, while sophomore Audra Hansen (Stamford, Ct.) netted two goals with two assists. Junior Jade Catlin (Middletown, Md.) completed a hat trick, freshman Chloe Bowers (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) struck twice, sophomore Grace Lydon (Rowley, Mass.) chipped in a goal and assist, and sophomore Macy Shultz (Adams, N.Y.) finished with one goal.

Although the Catamounts struck first at the 13:20 mark, the River Hawks did not take long to retaliate, using a goal off the stick of Hansen to even it up, 1-1, just over three minutes in. Continuing to control possession, the hosts rattled off two more goals from Catlin and Brockbank to jump in front 3-1 midway through the first. Vermont responded, stringing together three goals over the next five minutes to erase the deficit and own a one-goal advantage heading into the next quarter.

The River Hawks defense came out strong in the second quarter, holding the opposition scoreless for over 11 minutes. Meanwhile, the offense began to heat up as Hansen buried her second of the afternoon with 10:23 on the clock to even the score at 4-4. The run continued for UMass Lowell, as Bowers struck twice, and Shultz and Catlin each added one to take an 8-4 lead with just under five minutes remaining in the half. The Catamounts refused to back down, striking twice in the final minutes to cut the lead to 8-6 heading into the break.

After the break, Vermont cut the difference in half, scoring at the 14:10 mark to make it a one-goal game. It didn't take long for UMass Lowell to counter, as Lydon struck on a woman-up situation to reextend the lead to two. One more Catamounts goal made it 9-8, but the River Hawks erupted, ending the quarter on a 4-0 run, highlighted by two from Brockbank, to take a commanding 13-8 lead into the final quarter.

In the fourth, the visitors looked to mount a comeback, striking first just under five minutes in. UMass Lowell, however, wouldn't let them get any closer, scoring three straight to own their largest lead of the afternoon, 16-9, with three minutes to play. Vermont added two in the final minutes, but the River Hawks' strong defensive effort sealed the 16-11 victory.

Next up, UMass Lowell will head to Albany, N.Y., to compete in the America East Playoffs for the first time in program history. The River Hawks are set to battle the UAlbany Great Danes in the semifinals on Friday, May 3. Opening draw is set for 1 p.m. at John Fallon Field.
