River Hawks Fall to Vermont, 18-9, on Senior Day

Story Links

LOWELL, Mass. –  Junior Riley Lawhorn (Amherst, N.H.) tallied three goals, as the UMass Lowell men's lacrosse team (0-11, 0-6 AE) fell to the Vermont Catamounts (5-7, 3-2 AE) to close out the 2024 home slate on Senior Day.

"Vermont is a really good team.," said Head Coach Drew Kelleher "They're in the mix for a reason. Every year in the league they play a really tough style and have a lot of really talented guys. I was proud of our senior class, I thought they played excellent today and gave us energy and gave us some great moments."

Lawhorn, who led the squad in goals, also added an assist for a team-high four points. Behind him, senior Justin Longo (Kingston, N.Y.) and freshman Johnny Soi (Kerhonkson, N.Y.) each tallied two goals. Freshman Colby Frigon (Providence, R.I.) chipped in with a goal and an assist, while junior Khairi Sears (Columbus, Ohio) rounded out the point scorers with a goal. In net, graduate student Mark Pav (South Setauket, N.Y.) made 11 saves in 53 minutes, while senior Anthony Mancino (Holbrook, N.Y.) finished the game with a save.

The Catamounts opened the game's scoring, striking with 14:09 on the clock to take an early 1-0 lead. The River Hawks, however, didn't take long to erase the lead. After a save by Pav, Longo sprinted down the field, going coast-to-coast before burying his shot, knotting the game up at 1-1 with 10:17. Although Vermont retook the lead less than 10 seconds later, UMass Lowell was up to the challenge, locking down on defense and keeping the opposition from scoring again for nearly nine minutes. However, the visitors added three to take a 5-1 lead into the second.

The River Hawks' defense was strong to open the quarter, as freshman Hayden Almeida (North Kingstown, R.I.) recorded a caused turnover, and Pav made two saves to keep the Catamounts off the board for almost five minutes. Meanwhile, Lawhorn tallied his tenth goal of the year with 10:18 on the clock to cut the deficit to three. Although Vermont fired back with two over the next two minutes, Sears countered, using a quick spin move to get past the defender before sneaking his shot past the keeper, making it a 7-3 game with just under four minutes left. The Catamounts added three more to go into the break with a 10-3 lead.

After halftime, Vermont struck quickly, extending the lead to eight at the 13:35 mark. The game turned into a defensive battle, as neither side found the back of the net for almost ten minutes. With 4:15 on the clock, the Catamounts ended the drought, striking twice to make it 13-3 with 3:16 remaining. Although Lawhorn tallied his second of the day moments later, two more goals by the visitors sent the River Hawks into the fourth quarter trailing 15-4.

UMass Lowell found its rhythm in the final quarter, kick-started by a goal by Soi with 13:40 remaining to cut into the lead. Despite a goal by Vermont at 11:43, the River Hawks continued to fight, stringing together three goals from Soi, Frigon, and Lawhorn, trimming the deficit to 16-8 with 6:36 left to play. Although Longo scored one at the buzzer, the visitors fought off the remaining comeback attempts while adding two more goals to seal the 18-9 decision.

Next up, the River Hawks will wrap up the season when they hit the road to take on the NJIT Highlanders on Saturday, April 27.
