River Hawks Fall to NJIT, 12-4, in Season Finale

NEWARK, N.J. - Freshman Colby Frigon (Providence, R.I.) scored a pair of goals, and graduate student Mark Pav (South Setauket, N.Y.) made 16 saves between the pipes as the UMass Lowell men's lacrosse team (0-12, 0-7 AE) fell 12-4 to the NJIT Highlanders (8-6, 1-6 AE) in the 2024 season finale.

Sophomore Jackson Dean (Deer Park, Wash.) was right behind Frigon with a goal of his own, as junior Riley Lawhorn (Amherst, N.H.) picked up a goal and an assist. Freshman Nolan Marshall (Oakville, Ontario) and senior Curtis Redd (Amherst, N.H.) each notched helpers.

Despite a fast start from the River Hawks, NJIT opened the scoring with 8:35 on the clock to take an early 1-0 lead. The Highlanders built on their lead just over three minutes later, netting another goal at the 5:28 mark to double their advantage to 2-0. UMass Lowell began to find an offensive rhythm late in the period, as Frigon rang one off the post at 4:07 before scoring his eighth goal of the season with 10 seconds remaining in the quarter. Frigon received a pass from Lawhorn along the crease, lacing a shot to the left side of the goal to cut the NJIT lead in half.

The Highlanders tallied two unanswered goals to kick off the second quarter, but Frigon responded with his second goal of the afternoon on a 30-second man-up opportunity. After collecting a pass from Marshall below the goal line, Frigon unleashed a rocket past the left hip of the NJIT netminder to cut the Highlander lead to 4-2 heading into halftime.

The Highlanders came out strong in the third quarter, increasing their cushion to 5-2 on a goal 30 seconds into the frame. The River Hawks got it back when Dean broke through at the 10:09 mark, driving from behind the cage until drop-stepping around his defender to make it a 5-3 game. UMass Lowell wouldn't retreat, as Lawhorn disrupted a 3-0 NJIT run with his 13th goal of the season, beating the goaltender on a pass from Redd. The Highlanders, however, potted two more quick goals to cap off the quarter and take a 10-4 lead into the final period.

Both teams traded possessions to commence the fourth quarter, but it was the hosts who got on the board at 8:45 to take an 11-4 lead. Lawhorn fired a shot on a UMass Lowell man-up opportunity but was denied and cleared to the NJIT offensive zone, where they increased their lead to 12-4. Pav made four saves in the quarter to conclude his impressive day in the UMass Lowell crease, but the River Hawks couldn't mount the comeback, sealing the 12-4 final.
