River Hawks Face 14-9 Setback At Merrimack

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Freshman Colby Frigon (Providence, R.I.) tallied a career-high three goals, as the UMass Lowell men's lacrosse team (0-10, 0-5 AE) fell to the Merrimack Warriors (5-7, 3-2 AE), 14-9, on Friday night.

"I'm really proud of the competition we showed tonight," said Head Coach Drew Kelleher. "Credit to Merrimack for making plays in critical moments, but I'm hopeful we can build on this effort going forward."

Alongside his three goals, Frigon also tallied four caused turnovers and four ground balls, both personal bests. Senior Garrett Murphy (Billerica, Mass.) tallied three goals while junior Khairi Sears (Columbus, Ohio) chipped in with two, and senior Curtis Redd (Amherst, N.H.) added one. At the X, senior Jack Bird (Buffalo, N.Y.) won 14 of 23 faceoff opportunities, while graduate student Mark Pav (South Setauket, N.Y.) made 17 saves in between the pipes.

The River Hawks started hot, as senior Jack Bird (Buffalo, N.Y.) won the opening faceoff to give his team possession to start the match. Less than a minute later, UMass Lowell capitalized when Frigon found the back of the net off the pass from sophomore Jackson Dean (Deer Park, Wash.), giving his team a 1-0 lead at 14:01. Although the Warriors retaliated with just under 10 minutes on the clock to even the score, the visitors defense locked in, allowing only one goal for the remainder of the period to enter the second with Merrimack up 2-1.

The hosts were quick to attack to start the second, scoring twice in under a minute to own a 4-1 advantage. It didn't take long for the River Hawks to respond, using a goal from Redd to cut the deficit to two with 11:05 to go. The Warriors countered moments later to extend the lead back to three, but a solid defensive effort by UMass Lowell in the final 10 minutes, partnered with a goal from Murphy and Sears, chipped the Merrimack edge down to 6-4 at the break.

The Warriors opened the second half scoring with a goal off the stick of Trace Hogan 55 seconds in. Three minutes later, freshman Maverick Chedel (Groveland, Mass.) earned his first collegiate point when he dished out an assist to Murphy, who fired off his second goal of the evening at the 11:49 mark to make it a 7-5 game. The hosts, however, ended the quarter with a 4-0 burst to own an 11-5 lead heading into the fourth.

Despite a goal by the hosts to start the final quarter, the River Hawks showed their resilience, as Sears, Frigon, and Murphy each buried goals in three minutes to make it a 12-8 score with 8:47 to play. The River Hawks added one more off the stick of Frigon in the final minutes, but the Warriors added two of their own, sealing the 14-9 final.

Next up, the River Hawks will return home for the final time this season when they take on Vermont on Saturday, April 20. Before the game, the River Hawks will honor their graduating class in a Senior Day ceremony.
