River Hawks Soar Past Gardner-Webb, 21-2

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Thirteen different River Hawks found the back of the net, as the UMass Lowell women's lacrosse team (7-0) earned a dominating 21-2 victory over Gardner-Webb (0-6) on Wednesday afternoon.

With the win, the River Hawks move to 7-0, setting the program's longest win streak and surpassing the previous record set during the 2017 season. The victory also continues the best start in program history.

"A good team win," said Head Coach Lisa Miller. "We walked out of the locker room ready to play and were able to maintain structure and assertiveness throughout the game. Pleased with the effort and execution everyone put in."

Leading the River Hawks in goals were freshman Chloe Bowers (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) and sophomore Mia Mitchell (Akwesasne, N.Y.), each scoring three times. Freshman Bronwyn Hilbert (Lancaster, Pa.) tallied two goals and two assists, while senior Megan Brockbank (Bayport, N.Y.), sophomore Macy Shultz (Adams, N.Y.), and freshman Ellie Chung (Villanova, Pa.) each chipped in with two goals. Sophomore Grace Lydon (Rowley, Mass.) led the team with four draw controls, while freshman Alexa Kuhn (Rocky Point, N.Y.) saw 45 minutes in net, totaling four saves and allowing only one goal.

The River Hawks wasted no time, scoring a goal only 35 seconds in off the stick of Bowers. She followed with her second only a minute later to give the squad the early two-goal advantage. UMass Lowell didn't slow down there, as Brockbank scored her first goal with 8:12 on the clock, and Bowers followed with her third, completing the hat trick with over four minutes remaining in the first. Holding the 4-0 edge, Brockbank struck again with 2:47 remaining in the quarter, giving the visitors a 5-0 lead after one.

After a goal three minutes into the second by Hilbert extended the lead to six, the game slowed down, as neither side recorded a shot for nearly three minutes of play. However, the River Hawks broke the silence with a woman-down goal from junior Jade Catlin (Middletown, Md.) before Mitchell and Hilbert each added one to make it 9-0 with 7:05 on the clock. Almost four minutes later, with the Runnin' Bulldogs trailing by ten, the hosts scored their first of the afternoon, but a trio of goals in two minutes gave UMass Lowell a 13-1 lead heading into the break.

Much like the first quarter, the visitors' defense dominated for 15 minutes, holding the opposition scoreless and allowing only one shot. Meanwhile, the offense continued to cruise, as Mitchell tallied two goals, one on a free-position shot and the other in a woman-up situation. Junior Jenn McCarry (Ambler, Pa.) also tallied a goal, and sophomore Kaitlynn Anderson (Winnipeg, Manitoba) scored for the first time in her career to give the River Hawks an impressive 17-1 lead heading into the final quarter.

Looking to finish the game cleanly, UMass Lowell controlled possession for most of the fourth quarter. Sophomore Samantha Morry (Mashpee, Mass.) tallied the first point of her collegiate career when she found Chung for her first career goal. Later in the period, Chung added another before freshman Kaitlyn McKinnon (Concord, N.H.) scored for her first time, followed by a goal from freshman Marlee Green (Honeoye Falls, N.Y.), sealing the 21-2 victory.

Next up, the River Hawks finish their time down south with a trip to Presbyterian on Saturday, March 9. Opening draw is set for 12 p.m. in Clinton, S.C.
