BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Freshman
James Donnelly (Ottawa, Ontario) tallied two goals and two assists, as the UMass Lowell men's lacrosse team (0-4) fell to the LIU Sharks (3-1), 13-6, on Saturday afternoon.
Donnelly, who now has back-to-back multi-goal games, was one of five River Hawks to find the back of the net. Freshman
Jayden Consigli (Franklin, Mass.) scored the first goal of his career, while seniors
Curtis Redd (Amherst, N.H.) and
Justin Longo (Kingston, N.Y.), and freshman
Colby Frigon (Providence, R.I.) all added one as well. In net, graduate student
Mark Pav (South Setauket, N.Y.) made 11 saves in the start, while senior
Anthony Mancino (Holbrook, N.Y.) made one save in relief.
The Sharks' offense got to work quickly, striking just over two minutes into the game to take the early 1-0 lead. The River Hawk defense continued to battle, forcing key turnovers while Pav made multiple saves, but the hosts added two more to make it a 3-0 game with 6:02 on the clock. With the clock winding down on the quarter, LIU added one more to own a 4-0 advantage after one.
Despite the early deficit, UMass Lowell was resilient to start the second quarter, holding the opposition to zero shots on goal in the first five minutes of the period. Meanwhile, the offense began to find its rhythm, as Donnelly buried his first goal of the day with 10:59 on the clock. Just over a minute later, senior
Garrett Murphy (Billerica, Mass.) fired a shot off that was rejected by the LIU goalkeeper, but Donnelly made a diving effort in front of the net, tipping the loose ball in for his second of the afternoon. Although the Sharks added their fifth of the day with just over seven minutes remaining in the half, Longo ripped a shot past the keeper for his first of the season to pull back within two. The hosts, however, added one more with 16 seconds on the clock to make it 6-3 at the break.
The River Hawks continued its strong showing coming out of the locker room, forcing a turnover and holding the Sharks off the board for over four minutes. With 10:46 to play, though, LIU added their seventh goal of the day off the stick of Kyle Scandale. The back-and-forth battle continued, with Redd finding his first goal of the afternoon off the pass from Donnelly, but the Sharks added two more to own a five-goal lead, 9-4, after three.
In the final quarter, LIU fought off the visitors' comeback attempts by using a four-goal scoring stretch to own a 13-4 advantage with under seven minutes to play. The River Hawks continued to battle with goals from Frigon and Consigli, but the Sharks fought off the remaining scoring attempts from UMass Lowell, sealing the 13-6 final.
Next up, the River Hawks return home to take on Fairfield on Saturday, March 9. Opening faceoff is set for 12 p.m. at Cushing Field.
