River Hawks Tripped up By Fairfield, 14-6

LOWELL, Mass. – Six different River Hawks recorded a goal, as the UMass Lowell men's lacrosse team (0-5) fell to the Fairfield Stags (3-4), 14-6, on Saturday afternoon.

Freshman James Donnelly (Ottawa, Ontario) led the offense with a goal and an assist for two points. Seniors Justin Longo (Kingston, N.Y.) and Curtis Redd (Amherst, N.H.), junior Riley Lawhorn (Amherst, N.H.), sophomore Jackson Dean (Deer Park, Wash.), and freshman Colby Frigon (Providence, R.I.) each tallied a goal and freshman Jayden Consigli (Franklin, Mass.) contributed with an assist. In net, graduate student Mark Pav (South Setauket, N.Y.) made 13 saves in net and sophomore Luke Renaud (Skaneateles, N.Y.) tallied four saves in relief.

Fairfield started the game off strong, finding the back of the net just over two minutes in. Although they added a second goal with 10:40 on the clock to extend the lead, the River Hawks locked down on defense, holding the opposition scoreless for the next seven minutes. Meanwhile, the offense found its first scoring opportunity of the day, as Redd drove past multiple defenders before firing a shot past the keeper to cut the lead to 2-1 with 8:40 on the clock. With 3:15 remaining in the first, the Stags added one more to make it 3-1 heading into the second.

In the second quarter, the visitors struck first again, this time off the stick of Keegan Lynch, to take a 4-1 lead. Despite multiple key stops from the River Hawk defense, the Stags continued their scoring streak, tallying three more to take a 7-1 lead into halftime.

At the start of the second half, the River Hawks' defense again stepped up, limiting the Stags to only five shots in the first five minutes while allowing zero goals. Despite the defensive efforts from the hosts, Fairfield tallied a goal with 5:46 on the clock, kickstarting a five-goal run over four minutes to own a 12-1 advantage. Only 15 seconds later, though, Consigli found Donnelly in front of the net to cut the deficit to 12-2 heading into the fourth.

In the fourth, the River Hawks began to find their stride on both ends of the field, holding their opponents to only two goals in the quarter. Looking to rally, Frigon found the back of the net with just under three minutes to play, igniting a 4-0 run for UMass Lowell to make it 14-6. However, there was not enough time for the comeback, as the clock ran out and sealed the 14-6 decision.

Next up, the River Hawks start America East conference play when they host the UAlbany Great Danes on Saturday, March 16. Opening faceoff is set for noon at Cushing Field.
