Following a draw in the season opener against Lafayette, the River Hawks picked up their first win of the young season on Senior Day against the Blue Devils. Junior Oliver Holmstrom (Gävle, Sweden) got the scoring started with his first goal in the 38th minute, with the assist coming from freshman Santiago Somorrostro (Nashua, N.H.) for his first career point. Not too long after, only minutes into the second half, senior Shunnosuke Nakajima (Yokohama, Japan) found the back of the net off freshman Matteo Costa’s (Frankfurt am Main, Germany) first assist to give the team a commanding 2-0 lead. In his second start as a River Hawk, junior JR Gawel (Leonardtown, Md.) posted three saves en route to the shutout to seal the victory.

After staying undefeated through the first five games, the River Hawks looked to make it six straight when they hosted the Holy Cross Crusaders. Although UMass Lowell outshot the visitors in the first half, 7-5, both sides used strong defensive efforts to keep the game scoreless through 45 minutes. In the second half however, the hosts opened the scoring with a penalty kick goal by junior Iñaki Esnaola (Junin, Argentina), his first goal of the season. Only 23 seconds later, the River Hawks struck again when graduate student Guillermo Francés Poquet intercepted a pass at midfield before setting up senior Yanis Lakhlifi (La Crau, France), who ripped a shot past the keeper to double the team’s lead. The Crusaders made it a one-goal game in the 78th minute, but UMass Lowell fought off the remaining comeback attempts to earn the 2-1 victory and improve to 4-0-2.

UML 2, MERRIMACK 1 – RECAP

Looking to bounce back after their first loss of the season, UMass Lowell made the quick trip to North Andover to battle the Merrimack Warriors. Despite the opposition controlling possession in the early minutes, the River Hawks found their footing, firing off three straight shots before capitalizing in the 33rd minute with a goal off the left foot of Francés Poquet, giving the squad a 1-0 advantage. Though the score remained the same heading into the break, less than two minutes into the second half Francés Poquet struck again, this time with an assist from junior Calvin Scholten (Hengelo, Netherlands). The hosts struck only a minute later to cut the lead in half, but the River Hawks dominated the remainder of the game, outshooting their opponents 7-4 to earn the 2-1 victory and improve to 5-1-2, tying their best start since 2018.

Trying to start America East action off on a high note, the River Hawks came out with an excellent defensive effort against the Great Danes, making a handful of stops in the opening 30 minutes, including three saves by Gawel in two minutes. Moments later, Lakhlifi scored the game's first goal in the 32nd minute to put his squad up at the half. UMass Lowell dominated possession in the second half, firing off a flurry of shots before capitalizing in the 74th minute to double the team’s lead. The Great Danes looked to make a comeback in the final minutes, but the River Hawks continued their impressive playing, sealing the 2-0 conference victory and their fourth shutout of the year.

First of all, I want to thank the seniors for the work they put in all year. They left the program better than when they found it. I am incredibly proud of my team and staff. We had a winning season for the first time in a long time and we are on the right path. We are only going to keep improving and I am excited for the future.
