River Hawks Come Up Just Short, 62-55, against Boston University

LOWELL, Mass. – Sophomore Abbey Lindsey (Staten Island, N.Y.) led her squad with 12 points, and sophomore Maddie Rice (Charlottesville, Va.) recorded a double-double on 11 points and 11 rebounds, as the UMass Lowell women's basketball team (2-9) fell, 62-55, to Boston University (5-4) on Thursday evening at Costello Athletic Center.

"I'm a little bit disappointed in the outcome," said Head Coach Denise King. "We had a great opportunity tonight. The crowd was great, so shoutout and props to all the club team sports and the steppers, especially. We lost the game on the free throw line and on the boards. The tougher team tonight won, but I do think that we showed great fight and we are getting better with each game."

Lindsey went 4-4 from the free throw line, and added four rebounds and three assists. This marks Rice's first career double-double. Rice came off the bench to shoot 50.0% from the field, while also producing one steal and one block for the River Hawks. Sophomore Rayne Durant followed with nine points, three rebounds, one steal and one block. Watkins earned a team best of six steals, adding on eight points, four rebounds and four assists. UMass Lowell collectively outshot Boston University at the foul line (69.2% to 60.0%) and beyond the arc (18.2% to 15.4%).

The Terriers started the contest at a quick pace, generating six uninterrupted points. Durant and Lindsey would end their stretch with a bucket apiece to now trail Boston University by a pair, 6-4, at 5:31. Heading into the second quarter, the Terriers would keep the lead, 15-8.

Boston University opened up the next quarter with a basket, but UMass Lowell answered back with its largest run of the game, putting up 12 points and taking its first lead of the contest with 2:37 left in the half. The River Hawks held onto the lead as the teams went to the locker rooms for halftime, 24-22.

Senior Amina Kameric (Seattle, Wash.) began the third quarter in style with a shot from downtown at 9:34 to keep the River Hawks in front, 27-24. A few plays later after the Terriers had jumped on top, senior Tasha Lima (Roslindale, Mass.) helped UMass Lowell to a five-point run with a three ball to get the crowd on their feet and put the home team within two, 36-34, at 5:23. A pair of layups from redshirt-senior Sydney Watkins (Indianapolis, Ind.) and Rice helped the River Hawks recapture the lead, as UMass Lowell was able to come out of the 10 minutes ahead of Boston University, 44-41.

The Terriers buckled down for the fourth quarter and rapidly scored seven points in a row to regain the lead, 48-45, at 7:53. The River Hawks would go bucket for bucket for the remainder of the contest, but it was not enough to recover the lead.

Up next, the River Hawks will play their final non-conference game in 2024 versus Massachusetts in the race for the Kennedy Cup on Friday, December 20 with a tipoff scheduled for 1 p.m.
