River Hawks Fall to New Hampshire 4-0 In Season Finale

DURHAM, N.H. – Junior goalie JR Gawel (Leonardtown, Md.) made two saves in net, as the UMass Lowell men's soccer team (6-5-5, 1-4-2 AE) fell to the New Hampshire Wildcats (7-3-6, 4-1-2 AE), 4-0, in the season finale.

"First of all, I want to thank the seniors for the work they put in all year," said head coach Kyle Zenoni. "They left the program better than when they found it. I am incredibly proud of my team and staff. We had a winning season for the first time in a long time and we are on the right path. We are only going to keep improving and I am excited for the future. New Hampshire was better than us tonight. This was the first time this year I felt we were just out played. It hurt us giving up a goal so early we had to chase the game and we got stretched which hurt us at the end of the day."

Leading the offense for the River Hawks were seniors Yanis Lakhlifi (La Crau, France) and Kotaro Natsume (Toyohashi, Aichi, Japan), who each recorded a shot on goal. Also recording shots in the match were senior Liam Ireland (Yarmouth, Maine) and freshman Matteo Costa (Frankfurt am Main, Germany). Gawel, meanwhile, played the entire 90 minutes in net.

The Wildcats started the scoring right away, taking a 1-0 lead only 39 seconds into the match. Despite the early deficit, the River Hawks didn't let it affect them, firing off their first shot of the game only a minute later off the foot of Natsume. Both sides then turned their focus to the defensive end, with each team logging only more shots by the 20th minute.

In the 22nd minute, Gawel had one of his most impressive saves of the season, laying out to reject a header in the top left corner of the net. New Hampshire continued to pressure the River Hawks' defense, and although they held off their advances for nearly 10 minutes, the Wildcats struck with 30:22 on the clock to make it 2-0. Following the goal, both squads continued the battle for possession, but no shots followed, keeping it a two-goal game heading into halftime.

Coming out of the break, the hosts picked up where they left off, firing off two shots in the first five minutes. UMass Lowell continued to battle though, rejecting both shots while continuing to limit the Wildcats' opportunities. New Hampshire, however, added their third of the night in the 53rd minute before converting a penalty kick in the 67th minute to take a 4-0 lead.

In the final 20 minutes, the River Hawks continued to look for a way back into the match. Although the team was able to get the ball into the offensive end of the pitch for a majority of the time, they were unable to find an opportunity, sealing the 4-0 final score.
