Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

River Hawks Fall To Washington, 74-69, In Hard Fought Battle

SEATTLE, Wash. – Fifth year Yuri Covington (Wilkes-Barre, Pa.) scored a season-high 19 points, as the UMass Lowell men's basketball team (2-2) battled to the final minute before falling to the Washington Huskies (3-1), 74-69, on Sunday night.

"I'm proud of our team today for bouncing back from a tough loss Friday night with a chance to win on the road vs. a Big Ten team," said head coach Pat Duquette. "If we stayed out of foul trouble and made our free throws we had a great chance to win tonight."

Covington, who was a perfect 6-6 from the line, was one of four River Hawks to reach double-digits. Behind him, fifth year Quinton Mincey (Upper Marlboro, Md.) finished with 13 points and ten rebounds for his sixth career double-double. Senior Cam Morris III (Alexander City, Ala.) added 13 as well. All over the box score, fifth year Max Brooks (Waldorf, Md.) chipped in with 10 points, six rebounds and three blocks.

The River Hawks came out firing to start the game, using buckets from Brooks and Covington and a triple from Morris III, to take a 7-0 lead just over three minutes in. Despite the Huskies pulling within five at the 14:27 mark, UMass Lowell answered right back with four straight, highlighted by a fastbreak dunk from Morris III, to make it a nine-point game less than a minute later. Washington wouldn't back down, adding 12 straight to take the lead, 16-13, with 9:26 on the clock.

Looking to regain the lead, the River Hawks quickly added five, including a big second-chance layup from Mincey. The Huskies, though, partnered with seven of their own to keep their lead, 23-20, with 4:06 on the clock. Covington answered for his squad, scoring five of the game's next seven points to even it up at 25-25, but the Huskies finished the half on a 7-2 run to own a 32-27 lead at the break.

Coming out of the locker room, UMass Lowell began to chip away at the deficit, using a 10-7 stretch, which featured back-to-back dunks from Brooks and Morris III, to make it a one-score game with 15:59 remaining. After an and-1 by the Huskies made it 42-37, the River Hawks found their footing, putting together a 9-2 burst that started and ended with free throws from Morris III to own a two-point advantage, 48-46, midway through the second half.

Less than three minutes later, with Washington owning a one-basket lead, Mincey sank a highly contested layup to pull his squad back to even, 55-55, with 7:58 on the clock. The back-and-forth battle continued late into the game, with Washington owning a four-point edge. Although senior Anthony Blunt (Glen Dale, Md.) cut the difference in half with two free throws, a 9-2 run by the hosts with under four to play gave them a 69-60 lead. Both sides followed with excellent defense, as the score remained the same until 1:16 on the clock. Although a dunk by Brooks and freshman Martin Somerville (Bowie, Md.) pulled the team with five with under a minute to play, the Huskies fought off the final comeback attempt from UMass Lowell, sealing the 74-69 decision.

Next up, the River Hawks return home to take on the Fisher Falcons on Wednesday, November 20. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Costello Athletic Center.
