LOWELL, Mass. – For the first time in Division I program history, eight River Hawks scored in double-digits, as the UMass Lowell men's basketball team (3-2) defeated Fisher (1-5) on Wednesday afternoon at Costello Athletic Center.
Freshman
Martin Somerville (Bowie, Md.) led the way with 15 points, all of which came in the second half. Fifth year
Max Brooks (Waldorf, Md.) followed closely with 14 points and a season-high 15 rebounds for his second double-double of the year. Fifth year
Anthony Blunt (Glen Dale, Md.) chipped in with 12 points and 11 rebounds for his first career double-double. Blunt and senior
Cam Morris III, who added 10 points, finished tied with a game-high five assists apiece. Fifth year
Yuri Covington (Wilkes-Barre, Pa.) and senior
Xzavier Lino (Phoenix, Ariz.) each totaled 11 points in the outing, good for a personal best for Lino, while senior
Quincy Clark (Columbus, Ohio) and freshman
Armani Perkins (Brockton, Mass.) rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points apiece.
"After a tough trip to the west coast, it was nice to come back and get everybody some minutes, especially some of the guys who don't get to play on a regular basis," said Assistant Coach Bryan Dougher. "We did a great job sharing the ball with 24 assists on 39 made baskets today."
As a team, the River Hawks shot 59% (39-66), including 46% (12-26) from long range. The home side outrebounded their opponent, 59-27, and set a new season high with 24 assists. The 121 points also set a new Division I program record for UMass Lowell.
Covington and fifth year
Quinton Mincey (Upper Marlboro, Md.) kickstarted the River Hawk offense with three-pointers before Morris III laid in a basket to create an early, two-possession margin. Fisher's Anthony Douglas cut the lead in half, but Brooks sparked a 25-3 run that included four points off turnovers and was capped off by triples from Lino and Covington to stretch the lead to 30-7 with 11:22 remaining in the first half.
Less than two minutes later, fifth year
Mekhi Gray (Montrose, N.Y.) would drain a trey of his own and Morris III converted on an and-1. Clark then ignited a quick, 11-3 burst, making it 48-17 at 5:47. Laddis Taylor broke up the run with a three for the Falcons, but Brooks scored the next four points ahead of a bucket from Gray to give the River Hawks a 54-20 advantage with less than four minutes on the clock. The visitors would then put together a 6-2 spurt, however, UMass Lowell closed the period with nine of the last 13 points to take a 65-30 edge into the break.
The River Hawks opened the second half with seven straight points, with Covington starting things off with his third three-ball of the afternoon. Fisher cut into the difference with seven of the next nine points, but a 16-2 River Hawk run followed, including six points from Blunt and a trey from Somerville, extending the difference to 90-39 with 14 minutes to go.
Somerville added a dunk, free throws and another three to make it 102-48 at 9:16. Perkins scored all 10 of his points in the final seven minutes, aided by a three from senior
Ephraim Acquah (Hagerstown, Md.) to seal the 121-66 victory.
The River Hawks are amid a string of six games in 13 days. The team will play the next two at home beginning on Saturday, November 23 when Quinnipiac visits Lowell for a 1 p.m. tipoff.
