Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

River Hawks Stumble, 13-9, at Holy Cross

WORCESTER, Mass.—The UMass Lowell men's lacrosse team (0-11, 0-5 America East) dropped a tightly-contested 13-9 decision to non-conference opponent Holy Cross (1-12, 0-7 Patriot League) Tuesday night at Kuzniewski Field.

Sophomore Riley Lawhorn (Amherst, N.H.) kept his scoring streak alive with his third hat trick of the season to lead the River Hawks' offensive effort. The midfielder added an assist to bring his end-of-the-night total to a team-high four points. Behind Lawhorn, five River Hawks finished with two points each, with graduate student Sean Parker (Flemington, N.J.) picking up two goals. Freshman Ben Roberts (Tenafly, N.J.), junior Curtis Redd (Amherst, N.H.) and graduate student Dakota Clark (Bedford, N.H.) all matched Parker's two-point night with a goal and a helper. Meanwhile, senior Nick Harvath (Whitmore Lake, Mich.) dished out a team-high two helpers. Senior Brian Wiles (Longmeadow, Mass.) rounded out scoring with one goal against the Crusaders.

The team felt Lawhorn's impact on both ends of the field on Tuesday night. The sophomore joined freshman Owen Wills (Kingston, Ontario) with a squad-best two caused turnovers on the night. Freshman Luke Renaud (Skaneateles, N.Y.) earned the nod once again, making a season-high 24 saves in the cage.

The River Hawks came out hot with an explosive seven-goal run to start the first. Redd sparked the run, with Roberts and Lawhorn following quickly with one apiece. The team's defensive approach kept the Crusaders chasing the lead and the ball, with several caused turnovers early on in the action. Clark kept the energy with a low-to-low shot that zipped through the legs of Holy Cross' Dawson Friers. Renaud played an instrumental role in keeping the Crusaders off target with some near-impossible saves from close range. Parker and Wiles padded the lead with two final shots to cap UMass Lowell's first-quarter performance. Two late strikes from the Crusaders closed the gap late in the frame, but UMass Lowell held onto the 7-2 advantage moving into the second.

A remarkedly lower-scoring second kept both sides working hard on defense. Holy Cross gained some footing, tacking on two to UMass Lowell's one in the second period. Putting up a second, Lawhorn split up the scoring to keep the River Hawks up, 8-4, at the half.

The Crusaders turned up the heat on UMass Lowell to start the second half, potting three to creep back within one at the end of the third. Despite some near misses from River Hawk sticks, the offense could not generate momentum and stayed scoreless as they looked to regroup and hold onto the slight 8-7 margin.

Lawhorn capped his hat trick in the final 15 with the lone UMass Lowell goal of the second half, but a final scoring surge by the home team held off the River Hawks long enough to deal the 13-9 loss.

The River Hawks keep the road trip going this Saturday, April 22, with a trip to Vermont to take on the Catamounts. Faceoff is scheduled for noon.
