BURLINGTON, Vt. – Despite holding the opposition to just a 7-3 margin in the second, it was the first half that proved to be the differentiator today, as the UMass Lowell men's lacrosse team (0-12, 0-6 AE) fell, 21-3, at America East leader Vermont (8-4, 6-0 AE) on Saturday.
All three River Hawk goals came after halftime in the conference contest. Senior
Nick Harvath (Whitmore Lake, Mich.) led the way with one goal and one assist for two points. Graduate student
Sean Parker (Flemington, N.J.) and junior
Justin Longo (Kingston, N.Y.) each added a goal of their own, while freshman
Ben Roberts (Tenafly, N.J.) chipped in with an assist, as well. Freshman
Devin German (Acton, Mass.) grabbed a team-high three groundballs. Freshman
Luke Renaud (Skaneateles, N.Y.) and junior
Anthony Mancino (Holbrook, N.Y.) split time in the net, collecting 17 and two stops, respectively.
The Catamounts attacked early, keeping play in their offensive zone and jumping out to a 7-0 advantage in the first quarter.
The home team would tack on two more early in the second, but the River Hawks would threaten to get on the board off of a good clear with three consecutive chances, including an attempt on target by Harvath that forced a quick save by UVM's Matt Shaffer. Late in the period, Parker got off two more shots for the River Hawks, but they each sailed wide, as the Catamounts took a 14-0 edge into the break.
Coming out of halftime, sophomore
Riley Lawhorn (Amherst, N.H.) grabbed a ground ball and dished a pass to sophomore
Khairi Sears (Columbus, Ohio), who fired on cage, although a stop by Vermont's George Egan extinguished the opportunity. The River Hawks then continued to pressure when junior
Curtis Redd (Amherst, N.H.) forced a turnover ahead of his own shot on goal.
With just over five minutes to go in the third, the River Hawks called a timeout to draw something up. Back on the field, UMass Lowell won the ensuing faceoff and crashed the net, as Roberts tossed a pass to Harvath, who converted on a short attempt from the post to put his squad on the board and make it 17-1 through three.
Parker joined in on the scoring with a man-up goal early in the fourth before Longo found the back of the cage inside of the final three minutes to seal the 21-3 outcome.
The River Hawks will wrap up the regular season at home on Senior Day next Saturday, April 29. Faceoff is set for noon.
