River Hawks’ Comeback Effort Falls Short in 13-10 Loss to Merrimack

Story Links

LOWELL, Mass.—Despite an electric second-half showing, the UMass Lowell men's lacrosse team's (0-10, 0-5 America East) comeback efforts fell short on Friday night, dropping a close 13-10 decision to Merrimack (6-5, 2-3 AE) on Cushing Field.

Four River Hawks ended the night with two points apiece. Juniors Jake Davis (Franklin, Mass.) and Curtis Redd (Amherst, N.H.) both net two goals to lead the River Hawks' scoring efforts. Senior Nick Harvath (Whitmore Lake, Mich.) and graduate student Dakota Clark (Bedford, N.H.) picked up two points thanks to a goal and an assist. Rounding out the scoresheet, freshman Ben Roberts (Tenafly, N.J.), graduate student Sean Parker (Flemington, N.J.), sophomore Riley Lawhorn (Amherst, N.H) and senior Brian Wiles (Longmeadow, Mass.) tacked on a goal each while freshman Jackson Dean (Deer Park, Wash.) picked up an assist.

Sophomore Alexander Chairs (Ellicott City, Md.) set a new career high on defense, registering a single-game best three caused turnovers. Chairs also finished second on the squad on Friday in ground ball pickups with three behind freshman faceoff specialist Devin German (Acton, Mass.), who scooped up a team-high four. In the cage, freshman Luke Renaud (Skaneateles, N.Y.) stopped eight shots.

"First and foremost, I've got to give credit to Merrimack and their staff. They've done a really good job. I'm really proud of our team's efforts to stay in the game and battle. If we play like that, we're always going to have a chance, and I'm really proud of them for that," commented Head Coach Drew Kelleher following the game.

Both sides traded blows across the opening seven minutes, staying close with a 2-2 tie. After the Warriors took first blood, Davis responded with his first of the night to level the score. Though Merrimack squeaked ahead less than a minute later, Parker closed the gap with a quick snap at 9:43. The Warriors bumped the intensity, however, running out to a 5-2 lead at the end of the first 15 thanks to a three-goal scoring run.

Merrimack continued controlling the pace in the second quarter. Although Clark found twine with his lone goal of the night, two Warriors' goals to bookend the frame gave the visitors the 9-3 advantage at the half.

A second-half scoring surge breathed life into the River Hawks offense, outscoring Merrimack 7-4. Redd, Lawhorn and Harvath sparked the comeback efforts with three consecutive goals at the top of the third quarter. The Warriors retaliated, however, taking back the six-goal margin with a three-goal stretch of their own.

The River Hawks' found their footing in the fourth with a high-scoring outing. Redd, Wiles, Davis and Roberts all clipped the back of the cage to threaten the Warriors' lead, but the comeback efforts came up just short in the 13-10 decision.

UMass Lowell makes the quick turnaround for a midweek non-conference road battle with Holy Cross on Tuesday, April 18. Faceoff is set for 7 p.m.
