CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell women's basketball team (0-7) fell to the Boston College Eagles (4-5) by a score of 91-53 on Sunday afternoon at Conte Forum.
"I though Maddie did really good for us today on the offensive and defensive side of the ball; and we got better today as a group," said Head Coach
Denise King. "The kids did a good job of focusing on our goals for the game and making in game adjustments."
Freshman
Maddie Rice (Charlottesville, Va.) led the team with a career-high 17 points while adding seven rebounds and an assist. Redshirt junior
Sydney Watkins (Indianapolis, In.) tallied 10 points and three boards, while freshman
Rayne Durant (New Haven, Conn.) chipped in with eight points and seven rebounds.
Rice opened the scoring for the River Hawks with a layup less than a minute into the game after grabbing an offensive rebound on the other end of the court. Although the Eagles used a 12-4 run to take an eight-point lead midway into the first quarter, senior
Leilani Rodriguez (Worcester, Mass.) countered with her first jumper of the night, and Rice followed with three quick jumpers to help the River Hawks cut the lead down to two. The Eagles responded, ending the quarter on a 7-0 run to take a 23-14 lead into the second.
The River Hawk defense locked down at the start of the quarter, holding Boston College scoreless for over two minutes. After two free-throws by the hosts, freshman
Cire Worley (Philadelphia, Pa.) retaliated with her first bucket of the afternoon. However, minutes later the Eagles put together a 10-0 stretch to hold a 37-18 lead with three minutes remaining in the half. Freshman
Abbey Lindsey (Staten Island, N.Y.) scored four quick points to help the River Hawks silence the crowd and cut the lead down, but the Eagles extended their lead to 19 at the end of the half.
Out of the break, the Eagles scored four quick points, which sparked a 14-4 run. UMass Lowell continued to battle, as Worley hit the second three of her career to help cut into the deficit. In the final four minutes of the period, Watkins found her stride on offense, tallying five of her squads seven points, but the Eagles continued to fend off the River Hawks aggressive attacks, taking a 71-41 lead into the final quarter.
UMass Lowell stayed resilient in the fourth quarter, scoring five points in under two minutes highlighted by Rice who converted on an and-one opportunity. Boston College, however, prevented any attempt at a comeback by the visitors, sealing the 91-53 decision.
The River Hawks return to action Tuesday, December 5 when they take on the Brown Bears. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the
Pizzitola Sports Center.
