River Hawks Fall to Brown 74-54 on Tuesday

Providence, RI. – The UMass Lowell women's basketball team (0-8, 0-0 AE) fell to the Brown Bears (8-3) by a score of 74-54 Tuesday night in Providence.

Freshman
Abbey Lindsey (Staten Island, N.Y.) led the team with 14 points and added four rebounds with one assist. Freshman Cire Worley (Philadelphia, Penn.) tallied a career-high 10 points alongside one rebound. Graduate Student Mili Carrera (Lima, Peru) and senior Sydney Coombs (Newmarket, N.H.) added 10 points and combined for six rebounds.

The River Hawks started the game strong offensively, as freshman
Maddie Rice (Charlottesville, Va.) opened the scoring for the team on their second possession with a mid-range jumper. Moments later, a steal from redshirt junior Sydney Watkins (Indianapolis, IN) that turned into a fastbreak layup put her team in front, 4-2, less than three minutes in. The two sides traded baskets, putting UMass Lowell in front 10-9 with 3:35 remaining in the quarter, but the Bears rallied for a 9-3 scoring run, putting the hosts on top, 20-13, after one.

Although the Bears hit a three with 7:52 on the clock to extend their lead to 27-15, the River Hawks retaliated quickly as Coombs and Lindsey combined for three free-throws before Carrera drilled a trey, cutting the deficit back down to nine. Following another triple by Brown with just over five minutes remaining in the half, the UMass Lowell defense locked down the opposition, not allowing another field goal for the remainder of the period. On the offensive end, Coombs connected on another jumper to make it an 11-point game, but two made free throws at the end of the second gave the Bears a 38-25 lead at the break.

Coming out of the locker room, Brown found a 5-0 burst to extend their lead before Lindsey connected from the corner, sparking a 7-2 run by the River Hawks to make it 45-32 midway through the third. The Bears, however, responded quickly, stringing together a 17-4 run to take a 62-46 lead into the final quarter.

Looking to battle back, the River Hawks started the fourth hot from behind the arc, as Worley knocked down back-to-back three pointers, but Brown countered with two triples as part of a 10-0 run, erasing the momentum UMass Lowell had built. In the final two minutes, the visitors continued to claw back, as Carrera converted an and-one opportunity to spark a 10-0 run before time ran out, sealing the 74-54 decision.

The River Hawks return to action this Sunday, December 10th, for a 12:00 p.m. tip at Massachusetts.
