Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

River Hawks Best Saint Peter's, 69-61

JERSEY CITY, N.J. - Senior Ayinde Hikim (Washington, D.C.) tallied a game-high 20 points, as the UMass Lowell men's basketball team (4-1) took down the Saint Peter's Peacocks (1-3), 69-61, on Monday night.

"Tonight's win was just what our team needed and it says a lot about the resiliency of our group," said Head Coach Pat Duquette. "It was a very physical game and our group showed a lot of toughness to figure out a way to win on the road."

Hikim, who added a team-high three assists, was one of four double-digit scorers for the River Hawks. Sophomore Brayden O'Connor (Ottawa, Ontario) added 17 points, with 15 coming in the second half. Junior Cam Morris III (Alexander City, Ala.) was all over the stat sheet, contributing 12 points, five rebounds and two assists, while junior Yuri Covington (Wilkes-Barre, Pa.) drilled two, three-pointers on his way to 10 points. As a team, UMass Lowell shot 52.2% (24-46), while the defense excelled again, holding Saint Peter's to just 38.5% (20-52) from the field.

The offense on both sides got to work early in the contest, making it a 6-6 game only three minutes in. A quick three and jumper gave the Peacocks a five-point edge, but the River Hawks responded with a vengeance, stringing together an 11-0 stretch, highlighted by five straight from Hikim, to take a 17-11 lead with just under 11 minutes remaining in the half.

Although the Peacocks ended the scoring drought with a free throw, the UMass Lowell defense continued locking up the opposition, not allowing another field goal for over seven minutes.
Saint Peter's eventually used 7-2 burst to make it a one-point game, 23-22, at 5:22. Once again, though, the River Hawks responded, this time with a fast-break dunk by senior Max Brooks (Waldorf, Md.) that ignited an 11-4 run, ending with five straight from Covington and giving the visitors an eight-point advantage, the largest of the half. However, a buzzer-beater three by the Peacocks would cut the difference to 34-29 at the break.

The second half opened with a back-and-forth battle, but a three from Armoni Zeigler sparked a 9-2 stretch for hosts, putting the Peacocks in front, 42-39, for the first time since midway through the first. UMass Lowell immediately rallied, as Morris III strung together four straight, and O'Connor drilled a trey as part of their team's second, 11-0 run of the night. Another three by Saint Peter's cut the deficit down to five, but Hikim converted on an and-one shortly after a layup from O'Connor, extending the lead to 55-45, the first double-digit advantage of the night, with just under 10 minutes to play.

The two sides battled down the stretch, but neither could find a basket for nearly three minutes until O'Connor again connected from deep. With five minutes to play, the hosts tried to build momentum, but the River Hawks continued to counter, first with a long-ball from Covington, and minutes later with an explosive dunk from senior Quinton Mincey (Upper Marlboro, Md.). In the final minute, O'Connor went a perfect 4-for-4 from the line, sealing the 69-61 victory.

Next up, the River Hawks will have over a week to rest up before returning to action at Stonehill on Wednesday, November 29. Tipoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. at Merkert Gymnasium.
